from the forum i learned i could use the line out on my hybrid amp straight into my laptop to record. i recorded my entry to byob2 this way . i think its got a good tone. if i go line out to a p.a. can i expect to get a similar tone.

wait, you can't go fully line out into recording software without an interface (or something) and expect good quality, can you?

I tried that a couple years back with a guitar, an effects pedal, and a 1/4 to 1/8 converter cable, and the quality was terrible. I can do it into my interface/mixer now without a problem -- I thought you needed phantom power. That may be assumed in the question above, but I'm curious.

the usb cord is an interesting approach -- probably way cheaper than my setup. Indeed, you probably save enough money that the extra latency that tends to dog down usb recording is worth it.

definitely a way better option than the 1/4-1/8 converter cable into the mic jack on the computer.

the lightsnake was 35-40 dollars at guitar center. at first i tried a bullet right into the lightsnake. it didnt sound great .lately ive switched to an sm57 and it sounded good through the amp into the laptop.

the thing I don't like about line in through interfaces is that you don't really get a sense of acoustics -- I even noticed that from playing electric guitar into my mixer. The effects don't substitute or cover up that lack.

In terms of recording, I'd much prefer to be mic'd up. In terms of the PA system you talked about in your original post, though, that's a non-issue. And yeah, just like you can plug a guitar into a pedal into headphones without even using an amp, you can definitely plug the harp mic into a PA system. It would make no sense if you couldn't.
