Dang, just as I got one key away from having a full set of special 20's I cleaned up a couple of Marine Bands I had left over from the nineties and figured out how to play them better and fell in love with the tone.

Last week I got one of the new MS Blues harps from a client in G as a tip at the end of the job. I decided to take the covers from one Big River that I have and put them on the Blues harp.

Man o man I love that harp! At first it seemed hard to play (like you had to hit it hard), but I have been working on my embouchure and throat articulation and it is getting easy to play even lightly.

It has a loud, raspy sound and I do get the difference between wood and plastic combs, maybe the vibratory resonance of wood is what adds the rasp, I dunno.

I'm thinking about building up a set of Big Rivers and buying wood combs...

This seems like a great platform for a custom harp. Customizers, what do you think?

i am not a huge fan of hohner, but the ms blues harp is my favorite one they make. i dont customize so i like something that plays well out of the box. i have one in the key of A and it sounds good and doesnt need a ton of work like marine bands, just a little sanding of the reedplate to smooth the sharp edges.

i lived in houston '81-'87. lived in the heights.
i saw some google earth(?) photos of the area...
WOW!! they cleaned up that area and those houses quite a bit after i left!

i'll write myself a note and check for them this weekend.

Very cool, thank you eharp, let me know. Those would be great keys to get a jump with.

I'm getting ready to go to a jam in the Heights right now at Dan Electro's!

eharp i've been loving those bluesharps! I've got them all mineral oiled and sanded, they are a little easier to play but still not as easy as a special 20.

I am loving their wooden comb asses.

This lady I met at a blues jam in the Heights in Houston called my harps my "bitches" so there you have it...

I love my new little bitches!
