I have a Fender 600, so I have an amp with a 6". I also have an Epi Valve Jr. Half Stack. The cabinet has an Eminence 12" speaker. To the question- A friend built me a cabinet for fun. What would you put in it? P.S. I haven't seen it, but I don't think it's big enough for twins.

THANKS

I like the sound of that Eminence 12", personally. Is it your intention to push whatever speaker/speakers in the cab with the Fender?

I don't know Todd. I just have this opportunity to put something in this cabinet.

I ask what you'd push the cab with, because I don't know how many speakers that little amp would handle nor how efficiently a 4-5 watt amp would push them.

I assumed that I would push it with the Epi 5 watt head. I never thought about the Fender.

If you've ever played or heard a HarpKing with several 8's in it, it sounds pretty good, albeit it has plenty of wattage. Question is, how many 8's would a 5 watter push? That'd be cool to fill the cab with 3 or 4 8's! I'm sure 5F6H or someone more amp-saavy will chime in;I'd like to know the answer myself.

Having played out with an Epi half-stack and having tried both the stock Lady Luck speaker and a Weber 12A150-O in it, I seriously doubt that the Valve Jr. head can push much more speaker *well*. Even with a Lone Wolf Tone+ boosting the output a little, the stock head is pretty much tapped out driving the single 12. The volume knob is already right at the point where volume isn't going to increase, only grind, and it's already grinding plenty.

You *might* get a little more back-of-room presence with the right 2x10 speakers, but dynamics are going to deteriorate. It's a single-EL84 head and there's only so much there, it's already pretty efficient and maxed out on power potential. Decreased dynamics may not bother you if the tradeoff pays off, though--gotta try it & see.

Twin 8s are probably the ticket if you are looking to project a 4-5w SE head better for harp, a la the Premier Twin 8 Adam relies on.

I've seen anecdotal accounts of people powering 2x12s with single Champ heads and claiming they can put the mic right up against the amp's grillecloth without feeding back, but I have to think that if that approach really worked well (dynamics, etc.), everybody would be doing it. YMMV

I have had good results using a Weber 8" and 10" Ferromax ceramics with a 5F1 amp in a Deluxe cabinet.

Good call MJ, 8" + 10" ought to be possible. IMO Hondo ought to go with cleaner speakers because the Epi head is going to grind pretty early--that 12A150-O I mentioned was not clean enough to get the absolute max out of the head.
