Does this make sense to folks for harp playing.

I am picking up a new SM57 in the next few weeks and may give it a try. Any feedback would be great..thanks.

Obviously you could use more than just duct tape, like an elbow joint of hard plastic tubing. Cut it in half lengthwise and then sandwich the two parts with the elbow into position and screw or glue or tape the 2 elbow pieces together.

Would this kill the mic or could it just make it easier to hold.

It seems like there is is risk of pulling out the wires or messing them up...that's very iffy. Plus, I've never seen a snare drum mic'ed like that, the grill doesn't need to face down like that. Seems detrimental to the microphone (and possibly you if it zaps you!).

I like tooling around and tinkering, and recently put a SM57 element into a wooden bullet shaped shell (a salt shaker in fact). It was a tight fit but I was even able to squeeze in a volume control and it makes a great harp mic. I made a cable with a built in transformer to turn it into high impedance to drive an amp, but find that it works fine without it.
I don't know that the mod you talk about would make that much difference, but its easily reversible so you've got nothing to lose, and I don't believe there is any chance you would get zapped!

Why would you risk screwing up a brand new microphone? What does it buy you? It doesn't lighten it. It doesn't make it any easier to cup. If an SM57 isn't easy to hold, try a different mic. There is nothing magical about them.

You can use an SM57 for a lot of things like vocals or miking an amp. If you break it, it becomes trash.

The SM57 is the greatest mic ever made I think. I've used it for a million things. But, I would never do this.

If an SM57 is too long/heavy to hold, Ultimatize it!

Hey, didjcripey - how about a photo?
