Thanks folks for all the great information you all post here.
I have a question. Is there a reason that when tuning people scrape only the rivet side of the reed instead of the reed slot side to retune?
It seems to me that if I had a scraper type tool like Richard Sleigh makes (or even just a sharp tipped improvised awl) then I can tune the whole harp without popping any cover plates.
Couldn't I just reach inside the hole opening for the top reeds as Richard demonstrates and why not just do the same for the bottom reeds?
Sorry if this seems like a stupid question or if this is already how everyone does it and I have just misunderstood.
I have also taken off the top cover plate and filed the top of the reeds without removing the reedplate ( I don't have a scraper yet) I just stick a fat toothpick all the way inside the hole I am working on and with the SP20 that little plastic bar that splits the slot holds it wedged tight agains the bar and the back of the reed plate giving me a shelf to work on that holds the reed inplace witout pushing it up.
Does this ruin the flat edge that passes through the reed slot because it needs to be totally flat?
It's just that it is another step to pull off cover plates when you are in a rush and even just another step that slows things down when you have several harps to tune.
Any help would be very appreciated, thanks in advance.
