I picked up a used Q3, so now I can finally put some gear videos up on YouTube! Whew!
FWIW, there is an HD version coming out any day for more than double what I got the Q3 for. I was going to hold off and get that, but it uses the same capsules and my home computer isn't HD, so I would have been recording standard.
The HD has more options and better lighting, but I figured almost all my use would be at home where lighting won't be such an issue.
My understanding is the audio will be really good and probably similar to an H2, which was another option. IF I were to get more into taping shows, I'd go with the H4n, which doesn't have video, but will let you run external mics.
The H4n might end up on my Christmas list, though! Now off to get a small passive mixer for my revamped PA. ---------- Mike VHT Special 6 Amp for Harp Blog

I own a Zoom H2. I really dig it. The H2 does a really nice job. Placement is a big deal. It does a solid job of capturing the sound in the room. I used it quite a bit. I was recording every show and jam that I went to for a while.
Here is an instrumental from a jam. I play a little chromatic on this one. I can't remember who the other guys were.
About two years ago, I was playing a gig with some of my buddies. He recorded it on a Zoom H2. He sent a couple of tracks over to another friend, who was messing around with Pro Tools. He cleaned it up a bit and it ended up sounding fairly decent.
The difference between the original track and the finished one ended up being quite noticeable.

I don't think you would go wrong with either the H2 or the H4n. They are fun toys.

I suppose its too much to ask for a remote on the Q3?
So, unless you spend some time working out editing, you will be one of those people whose YouTube videos open with the image of themselves pulling back from hitting 'record'?

What's so hard about editing the video? Most of the videos that come out of video recorders will be too big for youtube to accept without editing. It doesn't take long and it shortens the upload time.

Here is a forum for the Zoom H2 and H4.
This thread is a must read for Zoom H2 owners.

I *think* the Q's come with editing software. I am not super worried about it as I have access to iMovie and Windows Media. Both are pretty easy to use.
Like I said, I was sold on the H4n until I realized that I could get the Q3 for a mint used and would use the H4n the same way 90% of the time at gigs. The real advantage is in doing YouTube videos, IMO.
Also, the line in on the H4n is a fantastic deal, BUT I hardly ever play large enough rooms with my band that I'd get a second track from the board that was more than just vocals. Plus, there are other ways of recording from the board that are cheaper...although you have to mix the tracks.
Chances are I pick up a H2 or H4n in the next couple of months....really depends on if I am gigging with the band I auditioned for or not. ---------- Mike VHT Special 6 Amp for Harp Blog

For youtube videos, I've used a Flip Mino HD or a Fuji Finepix F10 with decent results. I have a new Canon S90. I haven't tried the video mode on that.
I've had good results with the above cameras on youtube. The audio and video gets pretty heavily compressed by youtube, so buying something that does high quality sound or video isn't really necessary. Since, the lighting in bars or clubs tends to be horrible, low light video performance is very important. Finding a camera that doesn't high super high audio distortion seems to be easier to find.
I liked the Q3, but since I had just dropped the dough on the H2 (and I was super happy with the Finepix for casual video), I didn't look at it too much. I bought the Mino to shoot video of my kids and was surprised that it performed reasonably well in bars and clubs.
I don't shoot much video anymore. I'd love to see how the Q3 performs. Let me know when you've shot some video.
