A while ago someone asked me if I caught Johnny Sansone playing the chromatic at HCH I. I did not think I had it, but after going through then I found this....

Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom. If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn. They teach you there's a boundary line to music. But, man, there's no boundary line to art. - Charlie Parker

The power of that performance in person was unbelievable!!! I recorded the audio. It is one of my favorite songs. His ability to build that song up with his playing and break in with his lyrics sent chills down my spine.

It is a lesson I will not soon forget on how to paint a performance for ultimate emotional effect and power.

He starts about 4:15 and really starts to take off at about 5:05 and killed us at 5:58. It was brilliant.

It's cool to revisit this a few months out. The coolest thing that Sansone did, and Adam pointed this out during HCH, is his ability to play a lick over and then slow it down or speed it up.

It has a really cool feel over the music to hear him play wayyyyy behind what the band is doing. This is something that I don't ever do. In fact, I think I stick too closely to the beat; definitely something to work on...

Johnnys preformance is what I best remember about the whole event. At the end of this song there was an almost erie feeling that came over the place .I think is was shock and augh because we all wittnessed Johnny put his heart and soul into his preformance and were fortunate enough to see it happen live.
I say thanks Johnny for the memories!!!!.

PS. He did cost me an extra $100 + I was so inspired I had to go out and get me one of those Chromatics!!

Johnny's a great player all around-but his chrom playing is the most stunning of all.

Johnny Sansone is a boss!
He was great at HCH, and I've just about worn out the C.D. that I got from him.
I'll catch one of his shows every chance I get.

LeonStagg,

That would be cool. I am all over the place next week including AZ for the weekend, but it would be cool if we could at least hook up for a beer or something. If you feel like it let me know: dchargrove@ameritech.net. You are actually going to be by a cool blues club if you are staying by the stadium.
