Just recorded a train chug thing, which took me ages to get right-ish (it's basically a bunch of Filisko ideas I've tried to copy) and which broke my harmonica - it completely messed up my 2 draw in some evil way and now it sits there like a bad tooth. You can hear the off-note especially on the main rhythm bits. Why post it if it's out of tune? Because, after all the effort, I want revenge on my harmonica for failing me like that. It should sit here in shame and think about what it's done.
Any advice other than use an in-tune harmonica appreciated.
Sounds good to me. Im working on stuff like this, one of my biggest probs. is getting too much air in my lungs to get out quickly, any suggestions? Steve
Tooka - I know what you mean about the mushmouth effect. I tried to get round it by doing a whistle whenever I felt the wheels were about to come off - hence the absurd ratio of whistles to distance travelled.
Steve - I'd like to hear what a pro has to say about chugging technique; I honestly don't know. All I can say is what I'm doing: breathing out on holes 1-4 and using the hands to make it sound like an effect in its own right. Some of the hissing is a chance to get rid of air. Also, I reckon it's just practice - getting used to maintaining the rhythm.
I can't watch the video (dialup) but to get rid of air in a hurry - on each blow lift your top lip off the harp and let as much air out as possible. Coughing motion. Takes time to make it automatic. ---------- If it ain't got harp - it ain't really blues!!!!
