But this one is really pissing me off at the moment - Lemmy from Motorhead is advertising something here on TV in the UK with a really crappy version of Ace of Spades, accompanied by his own really crappy (biker bar?) harp playing:
---------- Andrew, gentleman of leisure, noodler extraordinaire.
Still seems like Lemmy ,, whats to be mad about? I figure alll crappy harp playing only makes the folk who are better & spend more time seem better. A few good bends could knock somebody out,,, who had only heard this type playing IMHO Steve
I posted the same video on here last week. i know the harps not great but it is Lemmy!! He's too busy drinking and raising hell to be sitting down and watching some of Adams tutorials. The harp is a bit lame but i was still chuffed to see and hear some harp on primetime telly:o) ----------
i have mixed emotions about the harp playing in this vid. it has its merits based on the continuity it provides the tune with, much like tom petty's harp playing. (and people love that) re: last dance with mary jane. for the purpose it serves here, its strictly supplemental and only meant as a filler, coming in last on his list of importance to the tune, with guitar and vocals obviously in the lead.
but the harmonica purists in us yearn for more, because we know that we COULD do more for this tune. for the record, this is the first time ive heard this song by any artist. so forgive my ignorance. part of me is screaming to just let him sing and let me wail...
if this is what is generally defined as biker harp, then my idea of biker harp is in need of serious reconsideration. some songs, particularly ones that have no harp to begin with, i biker harp to, and the crowd loves it. when i perform with my band, im introduced as the spice, and i like to think its for that reason. i add a lil pepper to some tunes that you just wont ever hear on a radio cut.
i have my moments, afforded to me being a part of a band, that im allowed to solo to a good country blues rock I IV V. im also quite proud to be a fill in sound in between vocals, you know..to be subtle when it calls.
all in all, from just this cut, im not certain it defines, entirely, his level of competence with the harmonica. ---------- Kyzer's Travels Kyzer's Artwork
Never been a fan of Motorhead (though I read a lengthy piece about Lemmy in Rolling Stone about a year ago - very cool cat). I totally dig the song and Lemmy's harp playing. Maybe it's just my pedestrian musical taste, or maybe it's just that I appreciate a little bit of harp playing that fits the song, even if the player's not blowing my face off with a lot of intricate technical stuff.
I might be a gang of one, but I like this. I listened to the version linked to by Steve, the one with the energy....well about .30 of it, liked this way better.
Kudos to Lemmy, he has the metal heads.....AND when he wants to.........an old Rock and Blues codger like me.
