So insomniac-al me (i know it's not a word), I'm up late last night watching the Craig Ferguson show and his guest is Marg Helgenberg (of CSI, China Beach fame). The trailer for the show during Letterman, shows her with a harp in her hand.....and I'm thinking I gotta see this, I didn't know she could play.

So on she comes. They're sitting there chatting and he pulls out a harp (which he apparently does semi-regularly), and he's a major wanker...the wankiest wanker...I mean he makes Dylan look like Little Walter (NOTE: I LOVE bobby zimmerman, I do). Then he pulls out a harp (still in the box, and wrapping, couldn't tell the make) and gives it to her, she claims to have had "lessons" and..........she's worse (if that was possible), ....and to top it off they're making jokes about about how you don't have to do much to sound good.

Now usually I don't get too riled about the Dylans and Springsteens..because (as BBQB points out) they're such great musicians and songwriters etc. it's not about harp virtuosity. But this was way over the top...it's like biker bar harp would have been a symphony by comparison. Why must we be so disrespected? ;-)

But this ferguson dude.....I wanted to throw something at the screen.

OK..i'm done...this forum is the only place to blow off steam like this on this topic...say this to your average joe..and he'll just think you're nuts......which I am.

carry on

EDITED TO ADD: On the bright side, earlier this week Hughey Lewis was sitting in with Jimmy Fallon's (late night as well...i said i was an insomniac) house band and blew some harp. I thought he was alright.

They're not putting Harp Players in a bad light, they're showing just how ignorant they are about what can actually be done with the humble Harmonica in the proper hands.
I admit, when I first started playing I figured it'd be a fairly simple instrument to learn and would be something that I could mess around on until I could get another guitar but let me tell ya' what, this thing can be damned hard to play and there's a lot more to it then just huffin' and puffin'. I watched some of Adam's lessons then saw Lee Sankey and Jason Ricci and I'm like "wow, this ain't easy".
With some practice you CAN carry a tune and play along with stuff but it's a far cry from what can be done with the instrument. Speaking as a guitar player, it's kind of the difference between 3 chord rock like Green Day plays and the stuff that John Petrucci in Dream Theater plays. They're both playing guitar, making music and selling CD's but one is a whole lot harder to do then the other.

"They're not putting Harp Players in a bad light, they're showing just how ignorant they are about what can actually be done with the humble Harmonica in the proper hands."

Yeah, I know they're not putting capable players in a bad light...I guess you had to see it. i'm not talking about them playing some first position easy to play song...they played nothing.....and for however brief it was..would this have happened with ANY OTHER instrument? Why don't they ever walk over to a drum kit and started randomly hittting the skins? Or over to a piano and start randomly banging on the keys? Or pick up a guitar and randomly slam down on the strings. that's what this amounted to.

Anyway my bad..rant over..... for good.... thanks for responding though.

EDIT: You know what...it's foolish to rant about stuff like this...if any mod wanted to delete this whole thread I'd have no problem with that..but in any case you'll not hear a rant from me about ridiculous harp wanking on TV again.

You can take that to the bank.

You know, that's something I've not even checked into this season, Hockey. I love the game but I've been into Football too much to care about Hockey all that much. Of course getting rid of our Direct TV hasn't helped either, no more Center Ice or ESPN. Guess that's why I'm hittin' the Football so hard, it's actually on regular TV, Hockey isn't. Oh well, don't stay in the box too long. We need ya' back out here on the ice.

Craig Ferguson is actually a pretty good drummer (really) and I like his twisted sense of humor, especially the puppets.

Lament Bobo, the more the intelligent people assume harmonica players have no skill, all the while knowing theyre spewing idiocy from their lips, the better! Whip one out and show them what months and years of simplicity can do.

It's that flanking thing I like so much.

Well like it or not, part of the problem lies squarely on the shoulders of harmonica players themselves, which won't win me popularity contests, but far too often, they fall into so many of the negative stereotypes without either realizing it or giving a rat's ass about it.

There are too many people who tend to believe that once you are able to play a single note and then be able to bend it, it automatically means you're ready to be on the bandstand, but truth be told, the vast majority of them are not and the stereotypical image of the drunk, slobbering jerk that does this, getting up on a bandstand unwanted, playing all over everything, sounding like total crap, not listening, thinking that they now qualify as a musician is too often the stereotype too many players fall into and people who play other instruments who look at the harmonica thru this stereotype, I really can't blame them for thinking that way because far too many players fulfill it and either have no clue or don't give a crap about it.

A lot of players also tend think too much in the "one size fits all" mentality and 99% of the time, that gets them into trouble and they wind up sounding like a fish out of water and it's another stereotype players allow themselves to fall into and why too often they're not wanted, accepted or respected on the bandstand.

I've had conversations with plenty of pros that when they see a harp player asking to sit in that they don't know, inevitably, the first thought is going to be, "Oh Crap!! Here comes another f******g drunk a** h**e who thinks he's a f*****g musician just because he blows a little harp and maybe can bend a note!!" Trust me, their voices are usually with disdain, and many who ask to sit in, more often than not, are terrible and should not be on the bandstand and guys like that give the instrument a bad name.

Again, a big part of the blame belongs squarely on the shoulders of harp players too.
