To piggy-back my Shure 440SL thread, I was offered the mic and a Kay 703 in trade for some PA speakers. The Kay is the not-so-safe version like Adam has. It powers up, but it doesn't make noise currently.
My only concerns are the amount of $ it is going to take to get the mic stand off the mic and the Kay back to working order.
That being said, and like I mention in the 440SL thread, I don't really *need* either piece of gear. Both seem like fantastic pick-ups, but they require me to invest money into making them up to snuff, albeit probably very very little.
Is there a market with harp players for the Kay? I am not looking to make a steal, but don't plan on keeping it long. I guess I am just uncertain if I'll make a profit off of it after rescuing it.
I was originally hoping to get $225-250 for the speakers. The mic seems to be worth $100-150ish, but I have no clue about the Kay. Thoughts?
It spent most of its life in a closet. Has the original tubes and speaker too. I'll have it by noon tomorrow. ;) ---------- Mike VHT Special 6 Amp for Harp Blog
These come up for sale occasionally, might be worth 125.00 in good shape, don't sell quickly, nice little practice amp, similar to a Harmony 300 series. (Might be a Harmony)
Ok, I don't know how I missed this in Googling the amp and doing a quick search of the forum here, but Brian Amundson, the person who worked on Adam's is actually a friend of mine!!!!
Brian Amundson modified my amp to add a small isolation transformer. It works great and is safe. In its old unsafe configuration, is the amp I flew over to Europe with and played in Amsterdam. It's more than a practice amp; it's a great little traveling amp:
I should add that my traveling amp of choice now is the HG2: much louder, great sound. But I do love the Kay, and when I played at K-State last month, I brought BOTH amps and got a great sound.
I'll second Brian Amundson- he repaired my old Kay 703, added an isolation transformer, a line out, on/ off switch and an "on" lite, checked the tubes, etc. Great service and super reasonable. ---------- Bluesharp- If you don't blow you suck...
Brian is a super cool guy! I haven't talked to him since the SPAH blow-off, but he is a class act all the way!!!
My next "blues" gig is Nov. 13 with The Mark Cameron Band. I am thinking of trying to use it miked, as I have a really nice QSC powered speaker that I can run my own separate mix to.
We'll see. Cosmetically it is in fantastic shape, but with the VHT Special 6 (now with a Ramrod!), I am pretty well covered in the small amp category. My initial instinct is to get it in shape and then let it go...I know, I am evil, but my HG50 is my Holy Grail - even at low volumes - and if a harp friend could put the Kay to good use, that'd make me happy.
The VHT is a sweet amp, but not an old school sound like the Kay. I would love to need an old school rig, but I haven't been able to find a straight blues band to play with in forever. We'll have to see!
