Talking about Muddy Waters, I 'd like to know what you guys consider his best work. Because I tried some, and didn't like it : I listened to a live album, from the period with Johnny Winter, and it seemed to me it was the same song over and over again.
Recently I listened to a double CD Best of : apart from 2 or 3 tunes (including "Got my mojo working"), all the songs were almost exactly the same (with different lyrics of course), very boring to me. Is it the same with all his recordings ?
On another hand, I must thank EV630 for making me search and listen "100% Cotton", that album is really fantastic, thank you mate !
And I think it was Joe L, Adam and a few others that pushed 100% Cotton. Great album, I just think if you're going to get one the best compilation and value for money is "Best of the Verve Years". Plus, I think the original Creeper cain't be beat.
Try "Hard Again" from the Blue Sky sessions -some of Muddys best work is on there, featuring Cotton and Winter. For me this is Cottons best work as a sideman.
Winters & Cotton give a very different flavor from all the other Muddy bands - I love Muddy but it's my least-favorite lineup - try Fathers & Sons (Butterfield on harp) - IMHO it's the best of the best of the best!
Can't imagine liking blues but not the father of the blues! ---------- ~Banned in Boston!
I pushed 100% Cotton, but I think I also said that I really dig his Best of the Verve Years and the Chicago/The Blues/Today! recordings.
I really dig damn near everything Muddy Waters recorded except for the Electric Mud and Super Blues Band sessions. I also didn't care much for the Fathers & Sons thing. Although, with some of the shit that passes for Blues today, the Fathers & Sons thing is better than average.
I really love his 50's tracks for Chess. I dig the Big Bill and Folk Singer recordings. I also dig the Unk in the Funk stuff, too. I could listen to Muddy Waters all day long and it never gets boring for me.
