It would seem to me, regardless of beliefs, serving your own ego above all else will not lead to happiness for you or anyone else. It always amazing me how two people can take very similar paths and have very similar ambitions but have two totally different end goals.
For example, look at the current top 40...people like Kanye West, Taylor Swift, Beiber, Glee...even within the machine there are varying levels of priorities. ---------- Mike VHT Special 6 Amp for Harp Blog
I imagine that some of you have been in situations where you're playing along, things are going great, and you feel like you have *connected* with something. It feels like you have tapped into a reservoir of creativity and/or ability that you simply can't access with your everyday consciousness. It feels almost like--or perhaps exactly like--something else has taken over and "you" are no longer playing; you have become a "channel" for something else to come through.
Any of you ever feel like that?
And then, any of you ever feel like you needed, in order to get yourself back into that state, to have a nip or two of something which very pious people might disapprove of?
@7thDave Yes - and anyone whose ever been to a house music club will know that euphoria can come simply from the music, dancing, and non-confrontational atmosphere (that is light years away from the macho posturing in rock clubs). The chemical enhancement isn't necessary (although I don't claim to be saintly)
Music, spiritualism and ritual are closely linked for very good reason. The hypnotic effect of the drums has been known since prehistory.
Being able to rationalise it in terms of brain chemistry and psychology does not make it any less amazing an experience when you get that endorphin rush.
Brothers and Sisters I say!!!! Brothers and Sisters!!!!
Im not much up for the mumbo jumbo 1st posted yes i did have a look..
OK ever since i had my ass canned for a mass posting on Religious wrong doings the subject of religion in the mucical context has been stifeled to a mute topic..
Religion has Played a very big part in Afro American culture with there gospel songs and such comeing from the cotton feilds, then into Afro American Gospel gatherings befor they had a House of worship to Pray in,Then to the juke Joints thats where Old Satan took the good Lords music and soiled it:)
Now i know very Little About the Subject but Just Because i had a Bit of a Wobbly moment about Religion in it's true context, this shouldn't be a mute point to focus the entir MBH Forums inability to discuse, Blues Music and it's conection to religion and the Devil:)
So Adam start a new thread get it out of your Head let it be Said:)
The very 1st Blues music i listened came from the cotton Feilds, songs of misery or songs of Hope and a better land out there somewhere..it had no musical content but i liked the lyrics and enchanting Rythms uplifting the workers spirits:)
The Devils music came much later with all that eletric jump up in there air music driveing people into a Frenzy ---------- Let it be said start a new thread Adam:)
Interesting post by Tin Lizzie, about the "crossroad deity" coming from African traditions. When I was in Mali, I talked with a policeman who came (allegedly) from the same village as the great malian singer Salif Keita. The guy told me that Salif Keita got his singing and powerful voice after going in the woods to meet the spirits of the forest. When he came back, he had become the greatest singer of the country. I bet that such stories exist about many famous african musicians, and that's a fact that in Africa, traditional music is related to animism, in the sense that the musicians follow initiation, and even the instruments are "magically charged" by ceremonies and sacrifices.
@Buddha : "the original point was to never discuss this as a religious topic but rather one that talks about control mechanisms over a soul/person and how it exists in all genres of music."
I'm not sure if this is about how music can be used to control people, or about something else. I'll read the thing about Lady Gaga, that will probably clarify.
Edit : ok I read it and laughed my ass out. That Tequila girl really has a little bicycle in her head...
