I saw him in Belgium some 20 years ago and it was great. I wish he comes around here too.

I third that - Great live show. - best rack player I've heard. Seen him three or four times over the years. If you don't own "Wicked Grin" - his CD of Tom Waits tunes from a few years ago - Get it!

He played a great club date here in SF during the Wicked Grin tour - and Tom Waits sat in for almost half the set. - One of my favorite live shows of all time.

Quite the family lineage too - google John Hammond and CBS records if you don't already know.

@CBH - love that moniker

John Hammond is fantastic. All round great player. Singer, harp player, and guitarist. Plays first, second and third position in the rack. Humble and gracious guy. Class.

John's fine in a band setting, but by himself, he's awesome and I prefer hearing him that way, much like a Lightnin' Hopkins or John Lee Hooker.

Yup, John is best by himself, but Wicked Grin is just a really good example of groooooooooove.

Amen on the groooove thang.

Sounds like a hot little session you almost got 86-d from Beef.

I was lucky enough to have jammed with Mark Naftlin once or twice in the late 70's or early 80's. Sleeping Lady Cafe' in Fairfax "Blue Monday Parties" - then listened to his Blues Power Hour radio show when I could catch it. It looks like he moved out of town a while back though .

I'll throw an ear on that Wicked Grin album, I don't relly like Tom Waits but, sung and played by John Hammond maybe...

The time I saw him, was at a festival and he played twice during the day : first time by himself and acoustic, and later electric with Duke Robillard (if I remember well). Like said BBQ, his solo performance was the best.
