I working on Golden Melody and 3 reeds at 5-6 holes are too short, I did whole lenght embossing at the both sides and I still not happy with overblows. Tolerances at the end of reed are too wide (I can see it with my microscope!), I can't stick the reed by embossing the end of the slot. What do you recommend except replacing reeds? I want to try solder a small amount of stannum to the end of the slot. Any other ideas? ---------- Excuse my bad English. Click on my photo or my username for my music.

You could always file the end of the reed towards the end of the slot. I ONLY say this because I had a tuning mishap in which I filed off the end of the reed (actually slid off the end - not remove material from the end). I couldn't figure out why my reed was still not sounding right until I got out my kids' microscope. I had moved a considerable amount of metal and had almost sealed the end gap (not evenly of course - that would take purposeful effort.)
I would probably do this experiment as a last resort. I have NO idea what it would do to the reliability of the reed or if it is even a reasonable expectation from all reed material (I was using a Marine Band).
I'm throwing this in as an idea, not as a tried and true solution.

Thanks, I'll try. Another idea is to replace rivets with screws and slightly change the hole in the rivet to let it move to the end of the slot. ---------- Excuse my bad English. Click on my photo or my username for my music.

Boris a safe and pretty easy way is to take socket (3/8 or aliitle bigger) and you can crush the end in the same way you would emboss with a socket. just start about an 1/8" in front of the slot. Just stop when the socket gets in the slot. Do it a couple times then look at it again with microscope.

Personally I wouldn't worry that much about it. IMO it's very doubtful that it's the cause of the OB issue.

chromaticblues What is socket? This one?
Harpwrench Thanks for response. How far your 4th overblow can be bended with your harmonica in the key of A? Mine is 3 steps (from C to Eb) is it enogh? ---------- Excuse my bad English. Click on my photo or my username for my music.

Yeah Boris! The one I use is a; 7/16" 1/8" drive deepweel socket. Get a set of jeweler screw drivers also. When you do it to much you can use a small screw driver to push it back in alittle. The more you do it the better you'll get at it. If your embossing slots then you should be sanding the draw plate flat! That really works well. I was surprised. I do it on glass with 400 grit. Anyway hope this stuff helps!

It depends on how the player likes his harp set up Boris.... A high energy blues-based player like Jason needs gaps that won't stick under stage pressure, and a lower harp like an A doesn't need a 4 overblow that bends up out of sight to make him happy. Jazzier, finesse type players typically can tolerate tighter gaps that would enable that C to be bend up to E and beyond with good technique.

chromaticblues I have bunch of jeweler scredrivers, I also sand reedplates too. It works with flat surface combs (like marine band or 1847 or MAnji or Blues Harp), I didn't notice any differences with Golden Melodies, because of poor GM comb.
harpwrench Thanks, it just depends on gaps? Which tool do you use to make a full lenght slot embossing? ---------- Excuse my bad English. Click on my photo or my username for my music.

About too short reeds. I take the same screwdriver I use for embossing and "emboss" the reed ends till it starts touching end of the slot (already embossed). ---------- Excuse my bad English. Click on my photo or my username for my music.
