After watching some videos of Howard Levy, I realized that there are a whole lot of options for playing smooth riffs on the low octave that don't sound like your quintessential blues licks. I gave it a shot and realize I sound like shit down there. Clearly my bends need some work. The weird thing is, I know I'm hitting the right pitch, but something about the tone sound really clunky on the 2 and 3 bent all the way down. Any suggestions on how to clean up my technique down there, in addition to lots of practice?

try and focus on the note resonating in your mouth. The better you can get it to resonate, the better and more full it will sound. Make sure not to close your mouth down too much, or you'll lose body and get a thin sounding note. Also focus on staying relaxed when holding bends. It doesn't take much tension to disturb the sound of a low draw bend.
