I saw a thread a few days ago about the "VHT" Special 6 Head/Combo and have been thinking about getting one, does anyone know if they have a good amount of gain(yes, I like that overdrive/tubes cooking thanga).

Anyway, I emailed "VHT" Amplifiers last week and asked them if it is possible to substitute the 6V6 power tube that it comes with for an EL-34 tube. I got their email today and here it is.

Hi Steve,

Thank you for your interest in VHT. Yes, you can substitute an EL34 for the 6V6 but depending on whether you have the Combo or the Head and the size of the tube it may not fit.

Best Regards

You can get more gain going than a harmonica should have. If the power tube is much bigger than a standard 6v6 (I rock a JJ), then it won't fit in the comb.

Maybe if you used a different speaker. I want to get an Eminence Ramrod, but I spent my fun money on replacement harps. :(

Actually the EL-34 tube will add maybe 2-5 watts more power that equals to more headroom before breakup and feedback. I had 2 heads a few years back that could use a 6V6-6L6-5881-El-34 and so on. You get different sounds from different power tubes.

My apologies, but I don't get your follow-up. You asked if it has a good amount of gain. If you use the pull-boost it will have a lot of gain...more than you'll be able to use before it turns to mush.

To clarify, adding an EL-34 will surely change the tone of the amp, I get that, but having the said amp in a combo, I know that with the stock speaker there isn't room for a different output tube - even if the amp can handle it - larger than the typical 6v6. However, if you used a different speaker in the combo, it might free up enough room to try that.

Why would you put an EL-34 tube in for more headroom before break up if you want a high gain harp amp?
