Forgive me if this has already been discussed, but, couldn't find what I was looking for so..
Got a 12 year old, mint, DR. Sounds great of course, but, still not getting the sound I want out of it. Could be me??
Wasn't exactly what I was looking for when I bought it, but, couldn't pass on the deal.
Anybody got experience playing this? Looking for ideas about possible tube changes or other mods. This is stock with an Eminence/Fender speaker. Tubes are as follows:
5AR4, 6V6 GT, 6V6 GT, 12AT7, 12AX7A, 12AX7A, 12AT7, 12AX7A, 12AX7A.
Thanks in advance for all ideas and suggestions.

The people at the EUROTUBES website can tell you what tube swaps should be made to voice a DR amp for harp. It doesn't say anything about it on the Eurotubes website, but they are actually VERY knowledgeable about tube swaps for harp.

Jay, what is the sound you want, any references?

As well as trying tube swaps in V1 (Preamp Normal - farthest Right)/V2 Preamp vibrato/reverb - second from Right), I'd also try swaps in V6, next to the power tubes, as well as trying lower mu tubes than the 12AT7, I would also try a 12AX7 in there (the Sovtek 12AX7WA will work fine in V6), this can fatten tone.

Another trick, for a hotter tone in tolex Fenders is to remove the preamp tube for the channel you are NOT using. E.g. if using the Normal channel (V1), pull the preamp tube for the Vibrato channel(V2), or vice versa. This rebiases and alters the voltage on the remaing tube. It's perfectly safe, but obviously that channel will no longer work unless you refit the tube.

V5 is the vibrato tube...as long as it works there is no real point in changing this. V4 will only affect the vibrato channel tone, V3 is the reverb driver and will only affect the sound of the reverb. V6 affects the tone of both channels as it delivers the signal to the power tubes.

The stock Sovtek 12AX7WA are pretty weak tubes, if you do end up using 12AX7 in V1/V2/V4, then I like the JJECC83.

You might also try a 5Y3 in the rectifier slot and biasing the 6V6s cooler, say from 17mA to 20mA per tube? Transformers will support 6L6 tubes with the GZ34/5AR4 rectifier, bias to 15-20mA per tube, Sovtek 5881WXT will work fine & not break the bank.

Cannibis Rex has been recommended for a 12" harp speaker by other posters, I quite like the Eminence 125 for a middy/punchy sound. A 12" to 10" converter plate for the baffle board might be an idea, to allow you to try a 10" speaker in place of the 12" (more proven choices in speaker models & better feedback rejection)...like an Eminence blackframe 102, Fane AX10 ceramic/Medusa 75. Speaker should be rated for 25W minimum! Ideally 35W+.

Trying all of that should keep you quiet for a while & probably end up costing as much as the amp did in the first place! ;-)

Thank you both for your replies.
What sound am I looking for? Geez, it's kinda one of those "I'll know it when I hear it" things. There are too many great players out there to narrow down too much, but, I love the sound Kim Wilson gets and, of course, Musselwhite just sings to me. I also know it the Indian not just the arrow. Prolly need to spend more time with Adam's videos as well. The closest I get to what I think I want to sound like is with my little Silvertone 1451. Really have a hard time being heard with it though, even mic'd. I'll take these suggestions in mind and talk to Eurotube as well. Prolly won't change out the speaker on the DR but will definitely look at the tubes. Otherwise, I'll keep my eyes open and end up selling this to a guitar player in the end. Thanks again to both of you!

I used to have an original BF DR. It is a high gain amp. Should be fine for the tone you you are after once you tame the feedback w/tube swaps. Personally, I prefer a cleaner set up, but that's neither here nor there. Bob Pletka at Eurotubes knows exactly how to re-tube your DR for the tone you want.

FWIW, I think Groove Tubes to sound a little harsh for harp. I think JJs sound warmer. But, YMMV.

Thanks guys. Bob at Eurotubes was a big help. Tubes ordered. Supposed to be in tomorrow. Hopefully I can install and adjust the bias before tomorrow night's gig.
