I'm happy to announce that Sugar Blue is officially confirmed to appear at Hill Country Harmonica next May. He'll be the headliner on Saturday, May 21. Satan and Adam will open for him.

Sugar will be bringing his band. He'll be lecturing/teaching for an hour, helping oversee a jam session with a local Mississippi band, and playing a one-hour set with his band--one of the hottest, funkiest bands in the business--in the evening.

The final set of the evening will be the Sugar Blue band WITHOUT Sugar as the backup band for an all-comers jam. Deak and I may blow one song, but basically it's you guys (and gals) going at it, with the Sugar Blue band kicking you in the butt. You said you wanted more jam time, you've got it.

This should be fun.

More news to follow as we have it.

When I saw them in Chicago, Rico McFarland was playing guitar. It's a quartet. Since Sugar insisted on bringing his band, I suspect it'll be the same quartet he appeared with at the Chicago Blues Festival.

Every single time I've seen him live in the last 20 years, he's had a killer band, although the personnel changes.

Needless to say, Sugar is filling the "modern" end of the spectrum of music we'll be presenting, along with Brandon Bailey. Billy Branch, Johnny Sansone, Deak Harp, Trip Henderson, hold down the more traditional end. Bill "Howl-N-Madd" Perry and his band are the Mississippi soul of things, as is Sterling Magee. And we're working on a couple more surprises.

wow this is cool! I saw Sugar a few months back at Terra Blues and his band was awesome. He had a real young drummer, female bassist, and a flashy guitar player.

As those who've read MISTER SATAN'S APPRENTICE will know, there's a Sugar Blue / Satan & Adam connection: Sugar was a NYC street performer long before he made his mark on the international blues scene. Nat Riddles insisted that he was the best solo street-harp player he'd ever seen. I have no recordings from those days, but some of the stuff on "Cross Roads"--an early SB album--convinced me that he was probably telling the truth. "Another Man Done Gone" has the feel of a street performance-piece.

I agree with Heart2Harp's suggestion about taping the workshops.
I would also buy them, as I do not think I will ever get the chance to actually attend.
