I just got a new harp in the mail, so I was setting it up: Gapping and Embossing. While blowing through the reed plate I found that I could overblow on just the reed plate... with out the harmonica put together... has anyone else noticed this? Is being able to do that beneficial to customizing?

Also, does anyone have any good advice on embossing the rivet? I'm just kinda guessing.

I think bending and overbending single reed is the main skill for any player. You have to know that 3 hole 1,5 step draw bend is actually 3 blow overbend and can be produced with completely blocked 3 draw reed. Any player must have an ability to produce at least 3 notes from single isolated draw reed: draw, draw bend, overblow. Depending on gap it's possible to bend the overblow up or to bend draw bend down.

For rivet embossing, I just turn the reed off the slot. Buddha has a secret tool for embossing whole slot without rotating reed.

Eh, I was working on a Suzuki, with the spot welded reeds.

Boris, ditto on swiveling the reeds out of the way to emboss all the way up the slot.

Jonl - I have done what you're describing by having just the draw plate on the comb and block off the space where the blow reed would be with my thumb and can produce beatiful overblows that way.
