Yesah, this is a real concern. When I was developing the SM57-JR, which was the predecessor to the Ultimate series, I knew I was going to screw up some mics so I was trying to buy some used ones on eBay. I got a few clones. In one case the transformer was a total dummy - the green and yellow wires went right past it to the XLR connector. On a real 57 (or 58) the wires at the XLR connector should be red and blue.

Not all clones are alike but this guy does a good, if a bit (DUDE! WAKE UP!!!!) long winded, job of showing you some things to look for.

I want to reassure my customers that I use only genuine Shure mics to make my Ultimate mics. I buy them from a licensed Shure dealer ('cuz I'm way too small to get Shure's attention.)

I have begun to include the serial number and product label inside the box when I ship an Ultimate 57 or 58 - although I didn't always - as another measure of "proof" that you're getting the real thing.

In all the new Shure mics the "glue plug" does seem to be pretty airtight, but I wouldn't be entirely surprised to find an air bubble in a genuine mic. Also, I am to lazy to go out to my shop and look right now, but I'm pretty sure the Shure mic bags are NOT real leather as this guy suggested in his video. And they have a smooth finish, not the wrinkled finish like on the EV bag the guy showed in that video.
