I went to see a friend's band play last night in Redlands, CA; and Bobby Joe Holman sat in with them. Great player and singer-he really helped the band out. I chatted with him a little during one of the breaks, and it turns out he's published a bunch of instructional books, CDs and DVDs. I checked them out on Amazon, and there are hardly any reviews there for them. Do any of you have any of Bobby Joe's materials? What do you think of them?

spot on eharp.
Someone bought me a DVD of his for Christmas a while back. It's OK for a beginner, but I only watched it halfway through. There's better out there, I think his stuff was all made in the pre-Youtube days. Not knocking the guy, he seems a pretty good player.
There's so much available for free now, that anyone making instructional DVDs ought to be taking a different angle (like Rick Estrin) or aim for the intermediate/advanced players.

I have his book. It provides decent, but very basic, information about fourth, fifth and sixth positions, as well as first, second and third. But the discussion of the higher positions is, IMHO, somewhat incomplete since he only focuses on playing them in a single register where the applicable scale/mode can be played without any bends. But not a bad introductory reference.
