I just finished watching KWS - 10 Days Out (Blues From The Backroads). I highly recommend it for anybody who diggs the blues. It's basically KWS going on the road and collaborating with a bunch of old blues greats. There's a DVD and also a CD with all the tracks (15 total) that are in the DVD documentary. A quick check on Amazon had it at $23(US) new and about $15-$18 used (in a two disc package). I'm purchasing it, as the copy I viewed was borrowed from a friend.

After viewing the DVD, I went on line and read about the making of the DVD and about KWS as well. Apparently there is some criticism of KWS and his motivation for making the DVD/CD, which relates to the usual "credibility" thing. All I can say is screw that... I loved it. Cranked it up loud on a hot summer day while I was in the kitchen... it was outstanding! Gave me a feeling I can't describe.

Three tracks standout for me.

1.KWS and Cootie Stark (guitar), and Neal "Big Daddy" Pattman (harp and vocals) doing Prison Blues.

2. KWS (guitar) and Buddy Flett (guitar and vocals) doing Honkey Tonk.

3. KWS and Etta Baker (guitar) doing Knoxville Rag.

EDIT: incorrect spelling of KWS last name: Shepherd is the correct spelling.

This DVD is where I discovered Jerry "Boogie" McCain a couple years ago.
I never hear Big Daddy Pattman name mentioned, but he has a great groove and his own style.
I have learned Potato Patch Blues but just can't work up the nerve to sing in public.
This is the promo

KWS has Mel Gibson as his father-in-law...that's gotta make for some interesting holiday discussions.

thanks for the post dude,

.38 to 1:24 is part of Prison Blues, though they're talking over it, so it doesn't do it justice. On a good sound system, cranked up nice and loud...man, the opening vocals and guitar just oozes Blues.

2.27- 3.00 is a piece of Etta (she was 90 when they recorded it) doing Knoxville Rag.

Re: Potato Patch - lyric hall of fame..."I might....shoot somebody!!!"

Todd,

Re MG: surfing cable TV the other day and local station is playing Mad Max, I was thinking: and all that time we thought Mel was ACTING crazy!

Haha, maybe ol' Mel went off the deep end because it dawned on him his son-in-law was a longhaired blues guitarist from Shreveport!

I'd like to see this DVD-I have always liked KWS.

Kenny's last name is Brobst. He married Gibsons daughter in 2006,before all the hysterics started.
