Hey all,
I just got back from checking out and playing at a new Blues Jam in Austin that I was invited to by my local harp mentor, Jose.
It was at the historic Victory Grill, a venue that has been in East Austin since at least the 60's.
I have to recommend that this is an awesome jam as well if you are coming through town.
It happens every Monday from 9-12.
You can pay a $3.00 contribution and have all the beer you can drink (keg). This week it was Shiner Bock.
For the past several years, the east side of Austin, historically African-American, has been getting "gentrified", property values skyrocketing, taxes rising, as the East Side has been transforming into the "cool" place to be for the hip and well-heeled.
For the past few years the local community has been struggling to keep the Victory Grill a Blues House, and not succomb to the allure of some of the new business models that are in vogue.
We've got to get people in the door!
I will be going and playing there whenever I'm in town.
There were 4 harp players there tonight including myself and Jose, and all with distinct sounds. The night went very well and the level of musicianship is high, very cool scene, and yes, some hot babes were present. (you know you care)
Also, this venue has mojo that is quite palpable, back in the day it showcased such greats as BB King, Bobby Bland, Ike and Tina Turner...
I had a blast, really put myself out there, and got to connect with some great East Side blues talent.
I am going to start promoting this one on facebook, I haven't really promoted my musical stuff yet but this inspires me.
If you come to Austin, check it out!

shane no way could the bar owner turn a profit here in the uk for offering 'all the beer you can drink' for $3, we would be battering the door down and drink him out of business on the first jam! Have a good time!

Excellent report, Shane! I'll be in Austin for my sister's wedding in November(on a Friday night). Dunno if I will have time or if I will be there on the right nights to catch any jams(it may be a fly in just in time/fly out the next morning kind of deal for me), but I will definitely keep them in mind. Glad to see you're finding a good scene there and digging into it. ----------

Harmonicanick, maybe for what you could save on beer you could fly here and check it out, lol!
Yeah Todd, next time you come through let me know! Even if you can't make a jam maybe we could meet for a beer, coffee or whatever and shake hands.
I hope to make it to NOLA soon and check out y'alls scene, too. ---------- Shane
