I've had a low "F" Promaster for a while now. It takes a heap of air to play. I decided to start embossing the reed plates this morning. The thing that really sticks out in my mind is the surface of this aluminum plate. It ain't smooth. There is a gauge that measures roughness average on cylinder heads and I'd like to know how this thing measures. The mill marks are very noticable. And there is oxidation in the middle of some of the teeth as well as on the end of the comb. If this were a tight seal saliva would never reach these places. I will definitely sand this comb before it goes back together. Has anyone else flat sanded one of these combs?

That's why the Hammonds play better than the Promasters. The combs are better made.

Talk about peaks and valleys. I just got back from the garage. Man, this comb wasn't even close to flat smooth, gees. Now I wish I'd left the reeds alone for the time being and just sanded things for kicks. I'm gonna put it back together in the morning. Chris recommends staying off the reeds after adjustment.

You got me thinking there, LR. I wonder how flat the stock wood and sanded wood are on your machine, compared to before and after aluminum.
I also wonder if there's adonization or a coating that you'll sand off and maybe create other problems. Like, brass on aluminum plus spit = ? ----------

I have a full set of Promasters. Some of the combs are smooth enough and some ain't. I made Micropore tape gaskets for all of them. With those gaskets, they're airtight.

Hey John, it wasn't coated, just plain stock. 200 grit wet/dry knocked it down rather quickly.
And lumpy, maybe I could market anode pieces for harps. Yeah that's it.
LR P.S. I don't do so good on these spam prevention tests.

Hmmm. I've got several Promasters, and there's a couple different comb 'looks' among them. Some are smooth gray, some have an almost-glittery look and a slightly rough texture, at least on the edges. I don't remember seeing any mill marks inside though I wasn't really looking too hard. ----------
