I just bought a ms57 off of ebay and it is not anywhere near as loud as my 545 or JT-30. I am using the same amp and the same cord. If I remember, I had to rewire the 545 from a low Z to a high Z. Do I have to do the same for the ms 57? There are no instructions with this mic. I would hate to think it is a bad mic.

All SM57`s are low-z mics and what you need is a good line matching transformer to convert it to hi-z.

The Shure SM 57 is a low impedance Microphone Rated impedance is 150 Ohms,..so it's low Z only,.
Never heard of a ms57,. maybe a typo?
It should be as loud or close to ya 545,..maybe the element is weak<> try Hosa MIT-435 Impedance Transformer XLR Female to 1/4" M / ebay Item number: 140396547236

You are using the same cord as for your JT30. That is the problem.

That cord is for a high impedance mic, AND expects its signal on Pins 1 and 3 of the XLR connector. The SM57 is low impedance and outputs its signal on Pins 2 and 3 of the XLR connector. You have no connection to pin 2 at all with your cable.

You need a standard low impedance mic cable that is XLR at BOTH ends, and an impedance matching transformer at the amp end of the cable - that will plug into the end of the cable and provides BOTH wiring conversion AND impedance matching, and will provide the 1/4" plug you need to plug into your amp.

With all that said, many SM57's on eBay are impostors made in China and don't sound the same.

Greg, where do you get these transformers by the way for future reference. Thanks.
