I was (re-)gapping my 1847 G today and came onto something...
For those that are interested... gapping for ob is basically about getting both reeds of an hole, but especially the blow reed, closer. Why especially the blow reed? because the blowreed has to block off for the ob to sound.
So basically just as close so that the blown note's attack is smooth and without delay.
However, how does the draw reed alter the ob..? well, I think it changes the sound of the ob. Basically the closer the draw reed the more imminent/stronger the sound (and also the attack). Further off the sound gets smoother (and the attack is somehow slower) The attack is however less a factor than with the blow reed.
So basically you can match the sound of the overblow to the normal blow note with the draw reed and facilitate the attack of the ob with the blow reed.
Any thoughts?
Btw. for everyone that wants to get into gapping, have a look at joe spier's (harpwrench) vidos, they're superb.
