NOD - the free version of Real Player does the trick for me. The quality seems pretty much the same as online, although I imagine that I could change this setting if I wanted to somewhere.

I use Movie Edit Pro from Magix. It's a complete editing suite and does cost money but it is very comprehensive and packed with features. Can be a bit frustrating cos there are sooooo many features to learn to master.

Other than getting a decent downloader , if you want better quality videos ,is to make sure the video is on the high quality setting, and if you only gonna play the video on your computer , get a Media player that plays FLV files (this is the original youtube format) this way you do not have to reencode .
