Joe Spiers queried the veracity of the upcoming SPAH test on the basis that Vern Smiths bracket (which uses a large weight to mask the weights of differing comb materials) might dampen down any comb resonance, and so make all combs sound the same.

That's a fair question to raise, especially if the masking weight was attached directly to the comb. However, Vern's weight is some distance from the comb itself. It's attached to the harp with only a small footprint on either end, and with thin metal strips.

We feel this arrangement is not going to dampen any comb resonance; certainly no more so than the damping effect of a player's hands on the comb.

Judge for yourself. Photos of the bracket are now up on a webpage for the SPAH 2010 comb test. Go to

and click the link in upper left (above the music player).

The page will be updated periodically before SPAH.

Brendan - I agree - a valid question to raise but based on the mounting/attachment system I wouldn't expect much if any effect on comb resonance. I think the test is valid.

Thanks for checking, Joe.

I should have mentioned there is only one attachment screw, at the front of the comb, which further reduces any damping effect. I've just posted a third photo showing a close-up of the attachment; the rear post is for alignment only, to facilitate quick changing of combs (webpage details above).
