Great example of evolution gone "right"!

I have a sibling who's an example of the opposite. Doesn't look much evolved past your first post.

Edit: replaced sister with sibling to not direct attention to her and not sound sexist.

Thanks Buddha. Sometimes those plates come out not too good, then I use them for parts. Sometimes they come out real good, and I use them for playing or I sell them to my friends pretty cheap. I too have a bunch, that I have either bought or taken in on trade. Its just a hobby at this time, but who knows.

How could it be mine? Is this a prize or are you selling them? after getting my Joe Spires Marine Band I would love to buy some more custom harps as I play the JS MB all the time but at the moment I can't afford them. It plays much better than my other harps & looks & feels much better too

Is it difficult getting those plates looking so clean? The reflections in through the back suggest you got back to bright shiny metal. How did you get the black marks off and did you have to remove all the reeds to do it?

Also, I assume you used new coverplates?

Boy! That does look nice. Good job.

What I meant was that your old Marine Band could look like that one on the inside.

Yes I do some work on Harps, normally for the local players here in New Orleans, but I am thinking of expanding. I do harps for Beltone, and Todd Greene and Johnny Sansone and others. I will be glad to discuss doing harps for you, Strawoodclaw. Just email me off list if you would.

As for the plates, I use Bar Keepers Friend and a toothbrush on the plates and covers. The one I took pictures of was one of the old rotten year Marine Bands that most everybody used for parts. Sometimes, though they turn out allright. You never know until you try it. Those are actually the old cover plates that I just cleaned and shined. My after picture has not had the comb sealed yet, though it is now. Normally it is shiny.

One way to help predict the outcome of these before sinking time into them is to pay attention to the slot on the opposite side of the reed. If it was punched with fresh dies, the edges will be squared off like the newer harps always are and it can make a decent harp. If the dies were worn out when the plate was punched, they'll look sorta rounded off and the harp probably won't be very powerful.

You know guys, I've worked out that I must be a 'wet' player because my plates look a bit like that after six months or so!!! I,m learning to customise for this reason and of course for performance, the black (and green) marks come off with very fine wet&dry paper and polish etc. I now need to get the rivets off for a complete strip down.......
