One of my favorite quotes ever, by a harp player, was from Charlie. I'm paraphrasing here--and I don't remember the source--but he said something like this:
I only play one song. Sometimes I play it fast--sometimes I play it slow--sometimes I play it in different keys--but it's just the one song. I was very fortunate to find a genre of music that would let me do that.
I hope that's reasonably accurate--Charlie is one of the greatest one-songers ever. . . ----------
I'm lucky to have played with the drummer - June Core, and the bass player, Mike Phillips. Both outstanding musicians, and the nicest guys you will ever meet. June can play a kit with half the number of drums and cymbals that most guys use and still get more out of it. He also has more shuffles in his pocket than any other drummer I've ever heard. Matt Stubbs is a great guitar player but I don't know him.
June has a CD out that is a collection of tunes he's recorded with great musicians. It includes harmonica work from Charlie, Mark Hummel, RJ Mischo and Andy Santana. It also has Kid Andersen, who is another SF Bay Area musician getting very well known. He WAS Charlie's guitar player for a while and is now playing for Rick Estrin. But The Kid also has his own CD out, and has a recording studio. Anyway, June's CD is on CDBaby at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/junecore/from/evor ---------- /Greg
You can't help but liking Charlie but I sometimes feel like he actually is playing one song over and over in different keys like he said. Sticks to certain patterns a bit often to me. But you still got to appreciate his playing.
