I found this out ( for me ) accidentally. At practice the other night, the Noble ( Rocket ) was performing fine. Then I bumped it slightly and this horrid fuzzy ringing started. Not like regular feedback at all. So I shut it off for a few minutes, and then restarted. Was fine, but when I went to move the cable into a different input I noticed the ringing again. AH! A microphonic tube! Easy enough to rectify, but I decided to wait until the next day. So I set the amp up in the garage, to discover the noisy tube and to flip in a better one. I had redesigned and had made a new back... to create open access to the tubes and to also allow more sound out the back of the cab. So, I am testing out the rig with the back facing towards me. After good tubes are in, I play a bit thru it, and like the tone and overall sound. I now can turn it up to what seems like twice the volume before feedback...whether played clean or dirty.
I then proceed to bring it to the evening gig, and set up this way. I propped it on a short stand with a slight tilt. There was a three foot concrete block wall about ten feet back, and ornamental bushes above that. Concrete floor. So, some bounce back, but alot of sound absorption, too. I could easily turn it around if the stage dynamics don't work as well. Bandmates were curious and more than a little fun-poking. Then we did the gig. Afterwards, all complimented the sound. Said it was the best tone they have ever heard and hit the sweet spot in volume. Unmiced and no line-out....and this was an outdoor event!
