Well done Mathieu. You did a good job on both vocals and harp. You should be quite proud of that performance in my opinion.

H2H - I concur with Kingley......very nice !!!! The vocals were also VERY good. For some one who has not played all that long..it is superb !!

Well done Mathieu.

Only one thing I would mention, the way you are holding the harp.

Your fingers are covering the rear of the harp the whole time. This is muting the tone all the time.

If you keep this open, your closed hand to open hand tone will be more pronounced, and your open tone brighter and louder.

If you watch Sonny Boy, he arcs his fingers up to make a funnel with his fingers like a trumpet horn.

It can be seen in this vid a bit.
But you'll see the only time he covers the back of the harp its to colour the sound.

Sonny Boy's group demonstrates what I keep on driving at.
Brushes on that drum, low key piano and bass. Soooooooooooooooooooo cool.
But 99% of all blowers will miss the entire point.
What a great demonstration of real skill

@Heart2Harp:

1. The biggest complaint I hear players of other instruments make about harmonica players is that they can't play any songs. You just proved 'em wrong. With class.

2. You sing it with conviction and I enjoyed your vocals. Like there's some truth in the words for you? Which is a good thing.

3. As a performance of a song it was coherent and meaningful.

@7LimitJI:

/If you watch Sonny Boy, he arcs his fingers up to make a funnel with his fingers like a trumpet horn./

Isn't that to more do with funnelling the sound into that kind of vocal mic?

Although...

You've got me thinking!

I'm going to experiment with hand position...

Thank you!

Mathieu,

Excellent job! Your vocals are outstanding. I really want to learn the song now after hearing you do it so well. Great time keeping and harp playing as well, but vocal really stand out. Cool!

@Ridge: Thanks. I am a singer first and foremost. I think that's always been my strong point. I suspect that's why I like learning and playing harp so much...it has this flexibility in terms of nuances that the human voice also possesses.

Cheers

@captainbliss.

I've used the funnelling for years, the effect is minimal, but all the little things add up and enhance tone and volume.

The main thing I was pointing out was Mathieu's fingers covering the back of the harp all the time, which does greatly affect the sound.

Mathieu, that was excellent. You have the makings of a band leader with those powerful vocals and tasty harping. But you also make it sound great as a solo piece. Nice work!

P.S. One of the best solo harp and vocal guys I've ever heard is fellow Canadian, Dave Mowat (http://www.myspace.com/davemowat), although the samples on his MySpace page don't showcase that. You should catch his act if you get a chance.
