I'll be in New Orleans (for the first time :) June 20-25. If you're resident there, please let me know of any gigs you're doing, or would recommend I go to during that period (harp or no harp involved). Good venues, events etc...
Also, what is the status of New Orleans public transport. Is it advisable to have a car, or can one get around easily with the trams and buses?
Thanks,

Todd Greene would be a good one to talk to, Brendan. He must be away from the computer today. He is part of the Crescent City Harmonica Club there in NOLA, may be the president.
Todd may correct me later, but I think if you have a tight schedule you may want a car, but if you have all the time in the world, public transit would probably be a great way to get a feel for New Orleans.
I am planning on catching you at Hyde Park Grill in Austin, I just live a few blocks away! Is that gig still on?

Being from Oz I remember a really great place in the French Quarter called 'Preservation Hall' where some great jazz was played by real old timers. Fantastic atmosphere. However that was nearly 20 years ago & I presume it hasn't changed ie it had obviously survived the prior 100 years! But since the big flood it may have changed.
Brendan do you ever get to Oz ie Brisbane in particular?

Brendon, I live in New Orleans, and I am pretty much up on what is going on. I am leaving town on Thursday, but will be back on Tuesday June 21st. But here goes a few of the happenings. Monday night at the Balcony Music Club (BMC) on Esplanade and Decatur, Mark Penton and Smoky Greenwell(Replaced Lee Oskar in War) run a jam starting at about 9:30 or so. There are a couple of real good jams right arount the corner on Frenchman. You never know who is going to show up at any of these.
Tuesday, Johnny Sansone, Anders Osborne, and John Fohl at Chickie Wah Wah on Canal at 7:00. Its a must see show.
Wednesday, Oscar Caballero of the HCH Table Jam Fame should be running a Jam at Hwy 61 Blues Club on Airline Highway across from Zepher Field (Baseball) He also does the Sunday Jam there, which started today. Also there is a real good anything goes jam at the Deck Bar on Jefferson Hwy. I normally go to both
Thursday has Johnny Sansone playing a intimate Trio at Clever Wine Bar at 6:30, which I love, especially the Lobotomy Beer. I will probably be there too.
Frenchman Street, in the Marigny is like Bourbon Street used to be. There is always something going on, and you can find J. Monque D, Sunpie Barnes, Andy J. Forest, and many more there, but some of our guys go travelling during the slow months of the Summer here.
Check WWOZ.org, and they have a pretty good live music schedule and tune in to 90.7 when you are here for a hourly update of Live and Local. If you email me at cscharp@bellsouth.net, I can forward gig information to you for the time you are here. Also, I will give you my cell so you can get in touch

As for the Transportation, that depends on where you are going. You have to be a little careful of where you go in New Orleans, and how you get there. If I am here, I will be glad to take you around. I will have a friend in from out of town, who also has never been here, so I will be out a lot. Again, email me, and we will talk.

Maybe, with luck, we can get the MBH famous Todd Greene to go out, but that has been difficult as of late, due to he work on his house, etc.
I also have some of the now famous Elixer to share, if you are so inclined.

Wow, my ears have been burning all weekend;now I know why! Brendan, I hope to get to meet you next weekend-I will make it a point to try for sure. I've been doing heavy-duty work on my house for the last month, and we will be moving in in two weeks(on top of working 50 hour weeks and band practice!), but I'd love to get out and relax one eveing and hopefully watch you play. Wish i could get out and accomopany you guys, but I gotta put this roof over my family's head, literally.
You're in good hands with Harvey;he's retired, a great tour guide and has his hand on the pulse of this city, harmonica-wise for sure-just don't try to outdrink him. ;-) ----------

Oh, and I hope you've got shorts, sandals and a hat-the heat index has been around 110 every day. You're gonna want to get out and see things, too-this is a beautiful city.

Brendan, I live in Jackson Mississippi (about 2 1/2 hours north of N.O.)... but on June 25th I'll be playing at Maison (on Frenchmen Street), with members of Easy Company (great band, all music students at Loyola) playing with me. It will be an evening of jazz/funk harp and some vocal.

Scott, I'm probably doing my final house move the next day after that, but if I can free up some time, I'll come out to Frenchman and check y'all out. The Marigny is a very cool area-enjoy it! ----------

I love Frenchman Street. There is always something interesting going on at Cafe Negril, or across the Street at the Apple Barrell. Then thee is Le Maison. It used to be Rays Boom Boom Room. On Monday' there is a Jam session with lots of horns, and some famous people. Down the Road at Negril is a Monday jam which is Blues, Funk, Jazz, Mardi Gras Indians etc and then up the road there is Smoky Greenwell and Mark Penton's Blues Jam at the BMC. Its too much to comprehend in one night. Across the street you can find Andy J. Forest, or J Monque' D, or Benny Maygarden, or Andre Bouvier, etc, Then there is the Spotted Cat with the Jazz Vipers, or the Phister Sisters. Tuesdays at Negril you will find John Lisi and Delta Funk, with Beth Patterson. Beth playz a 6 string bass, and tells jokes. She also plays a Bazookie, and Sings Celtic Mu sic. You can watch and listen to her for hours. She is the stuff of dreams. And on and on and on.

Used to sit in with the New Orleans Jazz Vipers at the Spotted Cat, with no mic or anything. It was always a blast.

Hi Scott, Todd, Harvey.... wow, my cup runneth over! Sorry for the belated response, but I've been offline for a couple of days.
Anyway, thanks for the great suggestions. I knew New Orleans was going to be fun, but it will be extra good hanging out with some friendly locals who know the hot spots for harp and other good music.
I will contact you off-list about meeting up etc.
Brendan
