nacoran made a good point on another thread about customizers shorting themselves so I thought I would start new one.
If you are a customizer would you rather make $120 average per harp and have a 6 month backlog or make $200 per harp and have a 4 month backlog? I would assume most customizers do it as their main source of employment.
I'm not trying to get anyone to raise their prices. It just seems we have a demand for top notch customizers. From what I can tell there are only 4 or 5 guys mentioned as great quality customizers on this forum.
I would assume to be a customizer, you must first be a great player...... Then you must have someone train you in the fine art or else spend a LOT of time figuring it out for yourself..... Then you must know how to set up the harp for the specific type player you are customizing for....I would assume some expense for quality tools needed....and the most important thing...earning and growing your reputation as a top grade customizer.
I guess what the whole point is...if you have a backlog and business keeps pouring in, why not find and train the right person to increase profits by volume? This is the way small business grows. Most would rather grow their business than turn away work or keep people waiting.
Buddha...are you hiring? Training anyone? How about the "Buddha Institute of Harmonica Customization" ??
Then of course some speciality people would rather do it all themselves and know exactly what goes on.

I trained two people this month.
If you want to come and spend a week with me, learning how to build harps and play them too, contact me off list.
I don't think any of us customizers make money vs the time spent.
