Hey You'dz Guys, I'm new to the forum, and I must say I have learned quite a bit about all things harp. I really wish I had something like this when I first started playing.(I've been at it for about 15 years, but just got introduced to customization.)My goal is to be able to end up with a nice playable marine band. I haven't delved into reed work yet, outside of gapping...
A few questions about sealing a comb.(I've allready searched the archives, and can't quite find what I'm looking for).
1.When sealing with butchers block oil: Do You want to wipe the oil off to the extent that it leaves a satin finish...or leave a bit on there that will dry to a gloss finish?(keeping in mind that a light sanding is the final step).
2.When You have gone through the sealing sanding process, and Your onto the final sanding: Do You want to sand the surface of the tines to a satin finish,or leave them glossy?
3. When I first started using B.B. oil I thought for sure I had bought the wrong stuff due to the stench: How long does it take for the smell to go away?
Thank You in advance...I love this place...cept for the occasional spitting contest.
Cheers,
Eric

I have tried butcher block oil and I find it a lot better to wipe off as much as I can. There is a dramatic change in color after the first coat, but if that first coat is not wiped off, the next two coats don't seem to go on as well.
If you wipe it off well, the smell goes away in about a week. At least, it's not very strong.
I probably mess up the flatness of the comb when I sand it so I won't comment about sanding.
I use a water-based urethane finish to cover the front and sides of the comb. I like a matte finish and, again, I find that less is more. The first coat is barely wet, although it covers the whole surface. This also makes it less of a problem to keep beads of it from forming on the inside of the tines as I brush it on.
The third coat is when it comes together and it really looks nice. It's hard stuff, so you really don't need a lot. So far, it seems durable.
I would not use butcher block oil to finish the front or sides of the comb. It's a great sealant, but it's kind of rubbery. I'll spend a few more dollars and take an extra day (six hour intervals) to put the right stuff on.

Thanks arzajac. I finished one up a while back and put the harp back together after letting it sit for about 3 days. I said to myself "there is no way I could get through a gig with this stench". The sealing/sanding made a big difference though. I have 3 other combs waiting for the final sanding. I'm going to wait another week to let them air out.
What brand of urethane are You using?
