So, what was the outcome of the amp test, and I'm curious what those of you in the crowd took away from it as well? Anyone video it?
Any comments, such as pros and cons, how it could have been more beneficial, etc?

I'll let Greg post on this. I'd say it was more of a lecture/demonstration than a head-to-head comparison. Two amps definitely did NOT stand out: my 1954 Deluxe and my 1956 Bassman. The former amp has never really grabbed me for harp, although I used it paired with the Premier for several years. It's a great little guitar amp, though. Perfect Fender-crunch.
The Bassman didn't quite get a fair shot because Greg, who was adjusting the knobs on the big amps, didn't realize that it has a quirky bass control. When you turn the bass up past about 9.7, the highs all suddenly roll off. That's where he had it. I tweaked it later for Billy Branch and miked it up and nobody was complaining. It sounded even better the night before in Rooster's when Deak blew through it. Man, THAT was a great sound!

Johnny Sansone played all his main-stage stuff through my Premier/HG2 combination, and my mic. I'm telling ya guys, small amps rule--as long as you mic 'em through the PA.

I really didn't want to portray this an an amp competition, even though it may originally have been portrayed as such. All amps have different virtues and vices, strengths and weaknesses. There is no such thing as a "best amp" unless you very tightly pre-define "for what."
I thought it was more important for people to understand what you can and can't do with amps of various sizes and speaker configurations, what the amp's role in tone is, and what to listen for.
Adam I'm sorry about not knowing the tone control quirk on your '56 Bassman - it would have been nice to hear it at its best compared to the Super Sonny, which was the only other amp remotely in its league.
I'd love to know what the attendees thought..... ---------- /Greg

No problem, Greg. You did an incredible job of educating us all. There's no way you could have known of that particular peculiarity. Which just goes to show: amps have quirks, and it takes a while to get to know them, figure out what sort of back massage they like, and get 'em to scream like they were born to scream.
Hmm. That sounds sexual.
