Irecently solidified the basic technique of blocking out only one hole. So, it makes some really pretty music, very harmonious.

I was curious to see if any of you use this technique for playing blues. I don't hear it mentioned often, and only occasionally hear it in recordings (Richard Sleigh comes to mind)

Yes, very cool techniques. Just tried it a bit some time ago, but I'll get back to it now.

As you say, more 'harmonious' than octaves.

Phogi, what fifth combinations did you find that you liked... i.e. when you're a little proficient at the techniques what are the fifths that sound good/that you find yourself playing?

I've been thinking about this too because I've been practicing TB octaves lately. There are some cool chords two note chords in there.

On a C harp
1-3 blow is like a C power chord on a guitar
1-3 draw could be played over a B minor or a D6 chord
2-4 blow is C major with the 3rd on bottom
2-4 draw is like a G power chord
3-5 blow can be E minor or G6
3-5 draw could be Bb5 or Fb5, but it would sound really sweet over G7 (the root in cross harp on a C)

There is a bunch of different ways to chord these combinations, but these are the easiest to hear without the root note from another instrument.

I do this quite often-it's my primary usage for Tbing...Beyond that, I LP for the most part. These chords are great for playing rhythm parts.

@phogi: What tips can you give us on the technique for hitting these tight double stops cleanly and precisely?

hvyj,

I point the tip of my tongue, and put it in the hole. Then just get your cheeks used to the slightly narrowed space. I initially struggled with this, thinking it not possible, but I heard someone could do it, so I kept trying. Once you get it, it is not hard at all.

German,

Right now I'm just messing around, getting comfortable, playing little melodies. The star spangled banner goes well with this technique, if you are selective about how you use it.

The tip of my tongue is pretty fat. I seem to get better results pointing my tongue upward and blocking the hole with the underside of the tip--but it's still a work in progress.

Charlie MCCoy has interesting pieces using double side playing in his instruction books. A lot of it is for
Cajun style playing.
