Hi Harpers, i need some advice, i want to get a digital camcorder so i can record my woodshedding so that i can build up a record of interesting moments, riffs and fills etc, that occur and most often get forgotten again. I bought a Samsung HMX U10 but the sound recording quality is crap so it is going back, can anyone suggest a reasonable priced pocket camcorder that i can use for this purpose and also take to the pub to record gigs. Any advice would be most helpfull

Well the audio is more important, so unless you particularly want to record video I'd suggest a Zoom H2 audio recorder.
If however video is a must then I'd probably go with just a good camcorder and then use a good quality external mic with it.

I have a Sony Handycam camcorder and a Sony Cybershot still camera that takes video. Both of these cameras have amazing sound quality. No matter how loud (even full bands) there isn't distortion.
Check out examples on my YT channel where I film local bands:

I've seen a lot of vids on Youtube from Flip cams and the audio usually sucks.

Geordie. If you want something simple without all the bells and whistles take a look at the Kodak Zi8. It can handle 1080HD and you can plug in a stereo mic. It won't be suitable for everyone but if you want something that's only the size of a mobile phone which you can whip out anywhere (careful, careful) this could be ideal. The editing software that comes with it is poor, but you can get better. Put Zi8 into YouTube and see some of the reviews.

Geordie - Thinking about it, if I was you I'd email Oxharp (Russ) and ask his advice. He records loads of gigs and his recordings are pretty much always top notch with great sound quality.

If Oxharp could advise us all through this thread I would greatly apreciate it. I'm interested in the same ideas Geordie.
Any more info having to do with recording practise, gigs along with reccomends for what equipment works well v.s. what to avoid, prices, etc., thanks for giving us the benefit of your experience.

I remember someone on this forum recommending the Zoom Q3. It records video and has good sound like the H2.

I use the Zoom Q3 for recording my drum lessons. The audio playback quality is really nice, the video side is OK, but not great. I'm not too concerned about video for my needs, but if you are, this one I wouldnt choose.

Hi Guys Sorry to dissapoint you all with my vid wisdom but there is not much to say really.
I use an old sonny handy cam and it gives me all I need and has great sound quality.
If I was going to look at a new camera I would not know where to start as technology moves too fast even for me.
I would look at a med priced HD quality with an external speaker source and a hdmi interface to go from camera to pc.
Hope this helps.
BTW you can pick up a sonny handi cam on ebay for next to nothing and go from there. Thats exactly what I did.

Gblues....I have a panasonic sdr-s26. paid 199. It is not hi def but has excellent resolution. You can select the kind of res you use to get move video on the sd card.
Playback is a whizz as is transferring the video to your computer....I love it. ---------- Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom.
