I think Deep Purple´s Smoke on the water suites very, very good for rock harmonica. My second choise for rock harp would be any of Black Sabbath´s greatest hits. Adam Gussow proved that Cream also could be a source of inspiration, with versions of Crossroads and Sunshine of your love. I also found another Cream song that is perfect for harmonica.
The parts where you do the "Smoke on the Water" riff are fantastic. And the stuff starting at 3:45...! Whew. You make me feel like Mr. Retro. I've said it before, but I'll say it again: Swedish Modern harp is ruled by King Hakan.
Awesome stuff!!! I love it! Here are a few off the top of my head that I do from time to time and fit harp easily...
Cakes version of Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive (4th pos.) Hey Joe (5th or 3rd) Little Wing (11th or 12th) Black Magic Woman (3rd or 5th) Whippin' Post (3rd) Layla (I've usually just done the outro in lieu of slide in 1st or 12th) Hard to Handle (2nd) Magic Carpet Ride (2nd and 3rd) Cocaine (3rd...comping using octaves is awesome here) I Want You to Want Me (2nd) The Joker (2nd) No Woman No Cry (2nd) Honky Tonk Woman
There are tons more...I had to start my "career" doing lots of bar hits, lol. ----------
A classic from Ike & Tina Turner that I sometimes use as a harp instrumental improgvising closely along the lines of the melody with varying embellishments is a tune that Otis Rush has also covered as a guitar instrumental and the tune is "It's Gonna work Out Fine." ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte
