After packing it in aged 11, I recently took up with the fiddle again, and found myself pretty comfortable and making progress in country blues, etc. After three weeks I can bluff along to a lot of pentatonic music. Thing is, IMHO it's a lot easier to play than the harp: anybody else agree?

I tried it once, since I play mandolin. I was unable to make the transition from vertical to horizontal..and the bow. Seemed worth a try, but it was beyond me in the time I had available to try it.
For me, none of the instruments I play seemed any easier or harder than the harmonica when i was at the same number of months learning them. I don't play much jazz anymore, but I think Jazz would be harder on the harp than on the trumpet. As far as the stringed instruments, i am finding the harp easier, month for month, in terms of what i can play on it.
I should add that i don't do much copying of licks or riffs once I learn my scales on any instrument. If I did, maybe the harp would seem harder.
Most of my instrumental playing, except trumpet, has a great deal of percussive influence since I have played percussion for so many years. The harp and guitar in particular let me do rhythm and melody at will. I am not good enough on the mandolin yet to do that. I play mostly arpeggios and rhythm strumming, except for an occasional lick.
Honestly, I think for ease of play and bang for the buck...the harmonica and mandolin come in first for me, in that order.
That's probably because I haven't learned ukelele yet.

I deleted the mememe spam. Back on topic, I do play a little mandolin. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r49cKZny3O0 My daughter has a 3/4 size fiddle. I've worked out a little of Ernie Carpenter's fiddle tune Elk River Blues and a few others. I will be playing fiddle if I ever get around to getting one. It's a natural progression for the mandolin player. ---------- www.elkriverharmonicas.com

i've been playing violin off and on since i was a kid (a bit of a love/hate thing thats stopped me progressing past where i was when i was 14). anyway i recommend a video called blues on the fiddle by Darrol Anger if you're looking for learning material. and no i don't find it easier to play than harmonica.
