I am overwhelmed by researching the different styles of blues! I thought it would be best to get recommendations from the forum instead of clicking my way through Wikipedia.
List of Blues Genres
What is your favorite blues genre?
Who is your favorite artist in each blues genre?
What is a good song or album that represents each genre?
Any suggestions or info is appreciated!

I think the hardest part for me is accurately clasifying many artists to any one particular genre, as stated here. Perhaps some benchmarks from bands/artists that are considered to be examples of each?
Here, i'll start:
Buddha-Purple Blues. This one I am sure of.
Little Charlie/Rick Estrin and the Nightcats-West Coast Blues?
Fab TBirds, Anson Fundenburgh-Texas Blues?
Little Walter, Older Muddy Waters, Junior Wells, James Cotton-Chicago Blues? ----------

In all of those genres, don't make the usualmistake harp players make of listening only to harp players because listening to other instruments give you big insights into the overall sound of things. It's a lot more than just trying to learn solos. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

I agree. I'm not a big fan of placing labels on music, as many artists have a broad scope, instead of staying cubbyholed. Additionally, I probably listen to the harp the LEAST of the instruments, unless it's a really phenomenal, standout type of player. But, if I must classify:
Chicago Blues-Junior Well's 70's heyday with the killer horn section defines this sound well for me, as does a lot of Muddy Waters or Howlin' Wolf.
Jazz Blues-Robben Ford has a lot of material that seems to define this one.
Lousiana Blues-Raful Neal, Tabby Thomas, Lazy Lester, Slim Harpo
Piano Blues-Otis Spann, Eden Brent

I hate putting a label on music too, but recently I have seen a reason to know this stuff. There was discussion on the thread about Todd Parrott and the thread about open mics where Adam was very specific about styles and where they were appropriate. I'd like to be able to identify these stlyes to avoid making a fool.

Don't forget about Piedmont - Cephas and Wiggins - or even country blues such as Roscoe Holcomb. There are others as well - Zydeco anyone?

Amen belfast harper!! That site is run by a California blues DJ named Charlie Lange and he often has stuff no one else does and his prices are damned good too. He definitely knows his stuff and tell Charlie I sent you. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

You could spend a day looking through the CDs on that site.
And the 'charlie's pick' cds are good for someone like me finds it hard making choices and hasn't heard of half the artists on the site.

If you stay on that site more than an hour, you could go broke just looking thru it, let alone buy anything. Trust me, I could easily drop $200 in an hour on that site. He also has some pretty good jazz, old school country, doowop and rockabilly there too ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

The owner of Blue Beat Music is Charlie Lange. He's a great guy and a blues encyclopedia. He carries stuff that no one else has.
