I had an interesting experience yesterday. The power went out in our office due to a downed tree on a power line. We were all just sitting around waiting for the boss to finally send us home. One of my co-workers who knows that I play came over and said to me, "So, what's this I-IV-V Blues Progression I keep hearing about?".

Dave is teaching himself how to play guitar. He played some as a kid and just started to pick it up again recently. At first I thought he was just jerking around but he wasn't. Next thing you know, I have one of my harps out and I'm going over the little bit of music theory that I know. I had to start out with a quick review of bars and beats per bar all the way up to explaining what I-IV-V means and demonstating the changes.

The point I guess I want to make is one great way to LEARN something is to TEACH it.

I have been a coach all my adult life. I am a better hockey/soccer player NOW than when I was even in college in the sense that, by coaching (teaching) I have a much better understanding of the game.

I train people on software for a living. One thing we do internally at my company is that we train each other on the software before we ever go out in front of clients. We do this not really to teach our co-workers something but to help engrain it in ourselves.

Sitting with Dave yesterday helped me get a better understanding of some of that theory. It probably helped me much more than it helped Dave since a lot of it was new to him and he probably didn't absorb even 50% of what we talked about.

I think I need to continue those lessons with Dave. Aside from me learning a thing or two maybe I'll get myself a guitar player to jam along with!

I like that, Jay. You're breeding your friend into a guitar player you can jam with. What a genius plan.

Teaching has helped me. For example, I had one student that wanted everything tabbed out. I now have a bunch of tabs to share with others inour club.
