I stopped smoking on the 1st April and have found that my breath control has improved enormously. Used to smoke Golden Virginia roll-ups. I'm on the patches still but the craving is growing weaker day by day. I can recommend it. I know it isn't easy to stop but one day you'll just get fed up with the hassle of being dependant on the stuff and you'll find it easier then. Deprive the government of your tobacco tax - they don't deserve it.

I'm with you Tooka. I am myself fed up of being dependant, and am trying to give up harp playing.
Patches do help, when I stick them on my mouth ;-}

Take it from an old-time veteran of many quits--keep using those patches for the recommended time period--you'll get thinking you don't need them anymore way before you don't need them any more.

I finally quit for good on the stroke of 2000--ten years now--I smoked about three packs a day for 40 years.

You're going to have a lot of extra money for harps now. . .

Hill Country, per my other half, is the last time we light up...were going the patch route too. Im ready now, and have cut down considerably in preparation for it. My gal and I are going to be ach other's support group. And yeah, wailer, im looking forward to saving the $100 a month too. Imagine what i could have in just a year?

I quit 5 years ago and never looked back. One thing that helped me was realizing that; I WILL ALWAYS BE ADDICTED no matter how long I go without smoking. so there is no compromising with myself "one wont hurt". Also after the first month, I found that if I "cheated", I didn't get what I was looking for, so it wasn't worth it. I stubbed out my last cigarette March 24, 2005 in a campground in Daniel Boon National Forest in the great state of Kentucky and will never smoke again.

e-cig's are a big help too.
You'll find that there are two cravings to deal with.
The first is from additives and bi-products and the
second is the nicotine. If you get an 'open filter'
style e-cig like N-Joy, you can get liquid nicotine
(Johnson Creek smoke-juice) and refill the thing
instead of forking out big bucks for preloaded 'filter'
ends. Also, if you fall off the wagon, you only fall so
far if you use the e-cig.
People with 'leaky gut' issues can also run
into problems with the patch. The glue can cause rashes
and other things. The gum contains gluten and the gum
itself can be incompatible with some blood types.
See 'ABO' or blood-type diet references like

ive never smoked cigeretts just pot or cigars and pipe tobacco, although with the last two most smokers dont inhale it,which i dont, its very relaxing,as much as pulling my harp out and playing. But i know its still kinda detrimental,i thought i might stop smoking pot to help my lungs, but Heck i ve been so broke ive only smoked once in a month here lately .and cant hardly see giving it up completly, but thank God i never smoked ciggeretts, that i could see being a problem to a harp player so congradulations.

Man hang in there. It is not over, and you will be challenged time and again but HANG IN. I cannot describe how glad I am to not smoke. Have not had one for years and, even now, there are moments. Like with booze, a day at a time. I still drink one a day, but if I smoke one, I will be back on them in no time.

I quit cold turkey in 2005. There are a few triggers that that set me off-- Burger King double cheeseburgers(must be the mustard) and working on my 1978 Ford pick-up.

I never could get quit with the patch myself--I finally got some herbal pills and some stuff you inhale--I think it was menthol or something--the system was called "Smoke Away" --it's still available at

http://www.smokeaway.com/100/?microppcsite=googleµppcterm=Smoke%20Away&gclid=CJCLvMiTpqECFQdkgwodj06XCg

This stuff might help you with getting off the patches, when that time comes.

I also bought a couple of cartons of non-tobacco cigarettes (Made from lettuce and cloves, I think). They tasted terrible, but for a while, I was doing a pack a day anyway. They really did seem to help me.

Good luck with quitting--it's one of the best things I ever did--not just for harp playing, but for a better life as well. . .

Way to go Tooka, i gave up on the 6th January and like yourself i smoked rollies. I had to give up after my collapsed lung episode. The doctor said it was 25 times more likely to come back if i smoked. I quit using the nicotine inhaler.

I still get cravings now, i dont think they will ever go away completly but it does get easier and it does help my harp playing and it really helps my stamina for Kickboxing.

Its good to know there are others on here battling with giving up smoking i thought i was the only one.

Good luck to anyone on here giving up.

I quit smoking 10 years ago. One of the best things I ever did for myself. (I quit drinking 5 years ago.)

I can't believe Jason Ricci smokes. But, so did I at his age...

I have not drank alcohol in 11 years or smoked cigs in 4 years. Dope makes me unomfortable now. Sometimes I read this story and see myself. Whats next?? No more tofu?

Staying Fit
-------------------------

A man was walking down the street when he was accosted by a particularly dirty
and shabby-looking homeless man who asked him for a couple of dollars for
dinner.

The man took out his wallet, extracted ten dollars and asked, "If I give you
this money, will you buy some beer with it instead of dinner?"

"No, I had to stop drinking years ago," the homeless man replied.

"Will you use it to go fishing instead of buying food?" the man asked.

"No, I don't waste time fishing," the homeless man said. "I need to spend all
my time trying to stay alive."

"Will you spend this on greens fees at a golf course instead of food?" the man
asked.

"Are you NUTS!" replied the homeless man. "I haven't played golf in 20 years!"

"Will you spend the money on a woman in the red light district instead of
food?" the man asked.

"What disease would I get for ten lousy bucks?" exclaimed the homeless man.

"Well," said the man, "I'm not going to give you the money. Instead, I'm going
to take you home for a terrific dinner cooked by my wife."

The homeless man was astounded. "Won't your wife be furious with you for doing
that? I know I'm dirty, and I probably smell pretty disgusting."

The man replied, "That's okay. It's important for her to see what a man looks
like after he has given up beer, fishing, golf, and sex."

@Hobo
Vaporizing it is the absolute best way. With the left-overs, also known as "vapor pooh", you can save it and then make butter out of it. That's what I call useful recycling. Nothing goes to waste.

I have been saving it for about a year, I made some butter the other day. It does the job... let me just say that grill cheese sandwhiches are awesome now. The psychoactive properties are quite present and they last for a few hours at least.

PS. You should not be smoking the left-overs. And they shouldn't be black after vaporizing.... if it's black, you've burnt it. A good vapor session ends with golden brown vapor pooh.

I quit in November of 2008. I used nic gum till the itchy lung went away. I highly recommend these tooth picks if you need an oral fixation (other than a harp)
