Adam, I bought your "Raw Beginners Start Here" video, I've been playing with the harp for over 30 years, yes playing with it. My problem is that I've taught myself to tongue-block and you teach lip pursing. I don't have a problem with this, just think I could pick it up alot quicker with what I know. Anyone with some help adapting would be greatly appreciated. Jay

Guess I shouldn't have started with 'Adam,'
edit: I meant using his name in title of message, not his material.

You might want to check out Dave Barrett at:
http://www.bluesharmonica.com/preview_bluesharmonica
Dave is a great teacher--has tons of information out in books and online lessons--and he pretty much TB's everything.
Hang around here some too--there is a lot of great information here--and Doc Adam is a wonderful source for playing blues harp--of course, as you know, he only TB's about half the time--but he still manages to sound pretty damn good. . .

I checked out Dave Barrett before, he mostly lip purses too... Everyone seems to treat tongue blocking as a second style. Guess I'll have to start lip pursing, although I'm really comfortable with tongue blocking.

I don't know why you think Dave lip purses--all of the material I have studied from him is TB'd--I even went to a Masterclass last year and all I learned was TB.
He might start you out getting clean single notes by pursing at the beginner level--but I don't think he would be considered an LPer at all.
For that matter, Adam isn't totally an LPer either--he's very into doing whatever will get the best sound, and he TB's a lot.
Bottom line is that, to really play the blues harp, I think a person needs to learn both styles. But that's just my opinion. . .

I don't have much to go by, but I did buy his 'Basic Blues Harmonica Method', it's mostly lip pursing. I understand that you need both styles, would be nice to be able to start with what I know 1st and then learn lip pursing.

Bro what is it your finding hard to do, is it articulation on some notes or a Riff,
i was a LP but TB now and TB every thing i used to do as a Lippy,
the only things i can't do is where the tongue is needed to play some rythmic articulation, but most times I'm a TB Nazi i TB from Holes 1 to 10
when i crossed over to right side i was very worried i would have to relearn every thing i knew, there was no need to worry i was doing all my Old Tunes in no time,
So Bro whats ya Problem see if we can help out:)

only thing I know about tongue blocking is playing single notes, but to me that was the hard part. Maybe I'm asking too much and should start from scratch, not like I play the blues now or anything, just a few campfire songs.

David Barrett teaches very well how to lip purse, I'm just finding it hard to convert over. I'm so comfortable with tongue blocking... It will take some time for me to learn it.

Ok Bro now you got nice clear single notes,
try some Bleeding this is where you let a Little bit of the next hole bleed into the note your playing,
ie,playing hole 4 let a bit of hole 5 bleed into it this gives a raunchyer sound,
Playing Old Camp fire songs try tongue slapping, this is where you play a single note say Hole 4 draw blow, remove the tongue playing a 234 cord, then putting it back on the comb playing the single note again,
Yo Hobo i learnt to TB very quickly the problem with learning to TB we think we should learn complete songs, this leads to Frustration thinking i will never get this tune or past this lick,
Problem is your trying to learn to much and learn the wrong way,
my method was sit down learn the first postion Scale Tb'ing, and then second postion TB'ing, once i was fluent with these scales playing my old tunes and new tunes was a Breeze,
Im learning the other scales as i go along, mixed with Songs and Licks on the High end of the Harp,
Bro's start out nice and simple learn them scales and take 1 song you have down pat and give it a go,
don't worry about new tunes convert them Old Ones over see how pleased you will be in a short time:)

I suggest you go to Dave Barrett's site: www.bluesharmonica.com
Everything he teaches there is done tongue blocked. He has lessons there starting from scratch and he starts everyone out using tongue blocking (not lip pursing). It's only $16 per month, and it has a ton of great material. It's a great deal.
There's no reason you can't also use Adam's lessons while tongue blocking, you can play the same things TBing. The only problem you may have is if you don't know how to bend yet. When Adam teaches bending he does it while lip pursing. Learning to bend while tongue blocking is a little bit different(and most people find it more difficult to learn), but if you go to Dave Barrett's site he will teach the technique needed to bend while TBing.
If you already know how to bend while tongue blocking, then their shouldn't be any problems using Adam's lessons while tongue blocking.

Thanks for all the info. Just got a little frustrated, bought some of Adam's beginner stuff and it pertained to lip pursing. Was a tad dissapointed.
Just looking for a direction, thanks for helping.
