Hey All, Another "Amplification for Dummies" question.
I love my new Harpgear Double Trouble amp. Sounds great, but I am still working on finding my sound. The SM 57 (with impedance transformer) sounds great. I'm sure I will use it a lot. My stock Green Bullet 520DX sounds pretty good too. A friend gave me an element and I wonder if I should switch it out with whatever is in the GB. The engraved lettering on the metal back says "Astatic MC-127"......a sticker on the metal says "MC-151".....the sticker on the box says "PMC 151".... I don't have a clue what any of it means.

He gave you a JT-30 element! I don't know how feasible it is to put that in the DX-you'd need a gasket for sure. You might be better off keeping your Dx as-is and shopping for a JT-30 shell, or one with a bad element. ----------

That's one of the last of the Astatic elements before they were discontinued. What happened was that the original shell pressers for the MC-151 got damaged and so they were forced to use the MC127 shells and then relabel them to MC127. The MC126 is a ceramic element and the MC151 is a crystal element.
That element is FAR better than those crappy Japanese Kobitone made elements being presently used in the Blues Balsters/JT30's being made in the last few years. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

I have that very same element in my early/mid-90s CAD HM50, which is a JT30 for all intents and purposes. It's my go-to bullet mic. I love the sound of that element!
If it's operational, he gave you a fairly valuable element. ----------

He says it has never been used. Looks to be in original packing. One side is hook-ups, the other has all the holes in it, and it is all encased in a rubber ring thing. Will it work? Any tips for my installer. He silver solders a LOT but doubt he has ever done a mic. Good info BBQ Bob.

Before you slap it into the 520DX shell(if that's what you are planning), if you've never tried a JT shell, you should. It's a smaller diameter by about a 1/4", and more comfy to cup-plus, the gasket that's already on it should fit, as that is the shell it was designed for. ----------

The element won't fit into a 520DX shell as is, because the gasket is wrong. You'd need to get the correct one from www.harpmicgaskets.com first. They cost around $10USD each.
When soldering it's best to use a heat sink to protect the element. Excessive heat can kill the crystal.
I'd go with the suggestion Todd made and get a JT30 shell for it. That way you will have two good working mics.

In addition to what Kingley says, I doubt that the volume potentiometer in the 520dx is appropriate for the MC151 element. Don't mess that mic up if it works for you! If you post a topic on this forum looking for a JT30 shell, you WILL find one. ----------

The pot on the Shure I believe is about a 250-600K pot. On any of the JT30/BB that have a volume pot is gonna come with a 500K pot, which really isn't correct for a crystal or ceramic. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte
