We are all stuck where we are due to a volcano in Iceland putting a vast dust cloud over Northern Europe.
This may go on for days/weeks, pretty weird

the airlines have made some tests and apparently there is no problem to fly. So maybe it will soon be back to normal.

Well at least in Finland we won't be having any flights today either, new announcements will be given in few hours. I saw some pictures of the engines on the army airplane after some flight and there is certainly problems when flying.
I guess the thing is that if there is no ash on the air then there's no problems, but that depends on the winds. In Finland there seems to be ash at least for a few more days..
EDIT: I hope that Volcano stops it's activities soon, as I'm waiting for a package from Greg!

well this is how the gods react when you run out of virgins to throw on the fire... Richard Hunter was to give a workshop here yesterday but had to cancel, damn! I was looking forward to that.. anyway , if you're in doubt as to how serious ash is then check out the link.

all things considered I would stay at home until it clears. apart from the safety aspect there is a huge cost per engine to clean out the ash and return the engine to full operation.
something must be flying though cos I just recieved an airmail letter ---------- My granddad gave me some sound advice on his deathbed. "It's worth spending money on good speakers," he told me.

The airlines are very keen to start earning money again. But they didn't send up instrumented flight test aircraft, just stock airliners. They're using the theory that "we didn't crash, so it must be safe".
And now the #2 Icelandic volcano has popped its cork too. I wouldn't like to have to rely on flying around Europe for a week or so yet. Just because a couple of airliners flew without crashing (and there's no conflict of interest in that activity!)doesn't fill me full of enthusiasm to risk my arse!
Cheers Maka

Maka, The airlines have no choice but to follow the decision made by European air traffic contollers even if the 'test' flight sent up is trouble free. The military are still flying though and the government has sent 3 Royal navy ships to 'rescue' abandoned holiday makers on the continent. Remember we brits live on a small island:)

It's interesting. My gf flew to Germany last Wednesday and I can't contact her on her mobile, so I don't know what's happening. Luckily she's staying with family. I haven't watched TV properly for years, so my parents asked me on the phone what I thought of the silence. I had been listening to the Gossip, so I wasn't aware of any silence. Anyways, I looked it up on the internet. It seems the volcano has been erupting for a month, but it's only news because the flights have been stopped. Sensationalism abounds in the press. The Mail online proclaims that Britain is engulfed in a cloud of ash. The skies look pretty blue to me, and the satellite photos show a thin plume of ash over the Shetlands, so the flights have only been stopped as a precaution, but it is interesting to contemplate how fragile economies might be in the event of another Krakatoa. ---------- Kinda hot in these rhinos!
