I just got the idea of bringing some of my old pre MS Hohner Blues Harps back to life (thanks MP!). They are pretty old and dull sounding but most of them are still in tune. What's the best way to restore them and what's the best way to clean these old reedplates. They have a fair amount of patina on the brass parts. Any hints?

Barkeeper's Friend. It's usually sold by metal polishes. It comes in a gold-colored can similar to Comet or Ajax(DON'T use either of those!). Wet a soft toothbrush and the reedplate, and sprinkle a bit, and brush gently. They'll be super bright and shiny after you rinse them.
EDIT:here it is:

Thanks! I'm afraid this stuff is not available in Austria / Europe. But we might have something similar. I'll dig through the kitchen drawers and see if I can find something like that.

Soak the reed plates in a glass of vinegar.

I had checked once before of its availability in the UK for another forum member, and it can be bought there, although the packaging may differ. ----------
