I recently got an epi valve jr. I was messing about with it yesterday, and found that the difference between a harp with slots on the side and one without is HUGE!
I have a marine band in C and a golden melody in C. With the golden melody I can get this deep bassy sound that I can't get with the Marine band, no matter how I cup.
Since I kinda like this deep sound, I thought, "I know, I'll swap the coverplates on my G, A, and Bb marine bands with the coverplates of my D, E, and Eb Secial 20s"
But, it did not work in the time I had. Looks like you need to do more than a simple drilling.
Looks like you also need to bend out the sides, otherwise the front rim won't fit into the groove on the body of the harp.
I thought about using tape for to cover the slots instead, then I thought, "I know, I'll ask the modern blues guys. I bet they have a clever solution!"
So, has anybody else here done that mod themselves?

If my memory is correct, Howard Levy plays Filisko Marine Bands with Sp20 covers. It is possible, but you might be right; probably a little more tweaking than a straight swap. I'm sure Harpwrench, Buddha or any of the other customisers on here will talk you through it.

I know that this is not the answer you are looking for but I have tried quite a few different harps and I'm going to stick with the Golden Melody (because of the tone you are talking about) instead of continuing to fight it.

The cover plates affect the sound a lot. Closed end plates roll the higher frequencies off a bit, especially if you're cupping it tightly.
Special 20 plates will fit Marine Bands with bit of modding. There's an explanation on how to do it here.

There are a number of design differences between a GM and a MB. GMs have LARGER combs, and larger, UNVENTED covers which are FULL LENGTH.
Both harps use the same reeds and reed plates, but GMs are tuned to ET. Because GMs are put together with screws instead of nails and have plastic combs they are more air tight than MBs and should have better compression.
Moral of the story: Putting Sp20 covers on a MB will darken the tone, but will not make it sound like a GM,
