Caught Sugar Ray & the Bluetones last night. Caught them at a small place called Chan's in Woonsockett, RI. Great show. His vocals sound a little like Kim Wilson's. Or maybe Kim's sound like Ray's. I guess I would have to say the vocal styles of Ray and Kim are similar. Wouldn't want to start an argument or anything. Any one in SE Mass. or RI should check out Chan's, lots of good shows & the chow was good too.

Yeah Sugar Ray Norcia is fantastic.
He's a very underrated harp player with very tasty chops indeed.

I could be wrong but I seem to recall that Ray's father was a vocal coach who taught him to sing and I heard somewhere that his father also gave some lessons to Kim Wilson among others.

I think the gig you went to last night was supposed to be caught on video by Gary Onofrio (Sonny Jr) as Ray was I believe going to be using his Super Sonny amp. If he did hopefully he'll upload some of it on YouTube.

At the start of the show, he did mention Sonny Jr being there. I didn't get too good a look at his amp, was tweed covered, had a label on the front that said 'Avenger'.

Ah that'll be very interesting to hear/see videos of that.
The Avenger is Sonny Jr's latest amp. Which he has still not given much information on yet. So far we know it's 45 Watts and has 1X12", 1X10" and 2X8" speakers.

Ray Norcia's dad was a well known music teacher in Stonington, CT and wrote a book on singing called "Voice."

Ray is appearing withe Magic Dick and Mark Hummel at the knickerbocker Cafe on April and also at Infinity hall in Norfolk , CT.

Ray has been playing the Sonny Jr 4x10 for years and recently went to the Super Sonny. The Avenger is Gary's newest amp and I would imagine Ray is giving it a test run. There was a post about it at harpl a while back.

Ray's an old buddy of mine for years. His vocals reminds me od Junior Parker a lot. Ray's dad was a vocal coach.

Around 5yrs ago I believe(time goes by so fast its hard to keep track anymore)I saw S.Ray and the Bluetones at a place at the J.Shore called Bubba Macs Blues Shack, anyway at the time prior to him playing through Sonnys gear he was playing through a Ampeg VT 40 which is a 60 watt +(and 60 + lbs) Harp players tone monster. It has four 7025,s and four cts tens.I told him that I had sent mine to Kinder for a mod and he gave me a double take and said he had done the same. The G-man that I was playing a the time said I guess you won,t have to search anymore after hearing it,well he guessed wrong because on that eternal quest for tone I bought a Meteor a couple of yrs later.BTW for those not in the know Sugar does alot of great playing and singing on one or maybe two of the earlier Ronnie Earl albums. If you havn,t heard any of these you might want to add them to the collection. One of the albums is called They Call Me Mr Earl.

The best of those albums is "Deep Blues". Ray does killer versions of "You Got Me Wrong" and "My Home Is A Prison" amongst others. His vocals and harp are amazing. You should also get the Big Walter Horton CD "Live At The Knickerbocker". Ray plays and sings on the first three tracks and knocks them outta the park.

For years I have been praying for a new Sugar Ray live CD. Nick Moss recorded one at Chan's and I hope Ray eventually does so as well. He's one of my all-time favourites.
